I am not a Muslim but I joined this online community with the hope that
I may learn more from the community! I first learned about Islam in a
college course I took in June this year. I live in Phoenix Arizona and
I have found no other resources. I want to learn more about Islam but I
do not know whereto begin. If anybody can help me learn I would grealy
appreciate it!

Assalamu Alaikum,
Welcome to this site and I would like to thank you for wishing to learn more about Islam, ilHamdulilah. I'm not sure how deep you went into Islam with that college course but you can first familiarize yourself with the five pillars of fiath, then maybe read some basics of the Qur'an and how we as Muslims believe it to be the Word of God. You can also look into the nature of God in Islam, for instance, it is forbidden for Muslim to think of God in a human form as many other religions do. I know IslamiCity has links to all of this information. I'm sure we would be happy to help you with more specific questions. Also, there is a forum for the basics of Islam but if you would prefer to get some answers from women I totally respect that and I'm sure we could help, insha Allah (God willing). Take care and good luck with your search!! Peace, J.R. |

Thank you very much for your advice! I never knew it was forbidden to
think of God in human form. I do have a question though. I know a
Muslim is supposed to prey 5 times a day. Is a Muslim only allowed to
pray at those 5 times? Also is there a set of subjects that a man or a
woman is allowed to pray about?

Assalamu Alaikum,
The obligation is the five daily prayers. The Prophet (saw) was known to say additional prayers either before or after the obligatory ones so it is also recommended to do some additional prayers. Logically, any additional prayer is beneficial and will bring rewards but it's not a sin if you don't do them. There are also supplications that you can say any time, any place you want and in any language you choose. These are, you know, your own prayers, asking God for help, forgiveness, health, etc. I don't know anything about a set of subjects. There are known dua'as (supplication prayers) which are said to help with specific needs. Within the salaat both men and women say the same things, it does not differ according to sex. We praise God, say surahs from the Qur'an, invoke peace on Muhammad (saw) and his followers (Muslims in general) and ask for forgiveness. We do those things in salaat. This is the best answer I could give for your questions, may Allah (swt) forgive me if I made any errors. Peace, J.R. |

Welcome Sis erotanes. Though there are numerous websites for anyone interested in knowing about Islam, here is just one of them to start with. http://www.emuslim.com/whatisislam.asp However, you are always welcome to discuss anything you don't understand or think it to be illogical from your perspective. Hopefully someone on the forum shall guide you through. Cheers. |
