I was told that the Prophet said that the best tafsir(explanation) of the koran was that of Ibn'Abbas, if this is so who is Ibn Kathir(english meaning" son of many") and all the other tafseers around if the tafseer of ibn 'Abbas was the best?

What a funny question. Is it some kind of a joke??

We all know that the first Tafseer of Quran was written years after the death of Prophet. The first Tafseer was written by Al-Tabri which it till today the most comprehensive Tafseer and its only available in Arabic. Tafseer-ibn-e-Khatir is infact some sort of a summary if Al-Tabri. It can't be claimed that which is the best Tafseer, all are best till the time they are meant for seeking guidence. Its always better to read as many Tafseers as possible and some of famous modren day Tafseers are :-

. By Abdullah Yousaf Ali.

2. Muhammad Asad. (converted from Judism)

3. Maulana Abu Ala Maudaudi.

4. Abdul Majid Darya Abadi.

Son of Kathir would be better, as Kathir can also be a name.
