Consider Ayat 73 of Surat Tauba.

Assalam alaikum,
In Ayat 73 of Surat Tauba of the Holy Qur'an (9:73), Allah, Azzah Wa Jallah, says:--
   "O Prophet, struggle against the disbelievers and
     the hypocrites."

 In his commentary of the Holy Qur'an, Sayyid Sahl Ibn Abdullah al-Tustari, may Allah be Merciful to him, metaphorically interpretated this Ayat as calling us to "struggle against [our] lower self with the sword of opposition! Place upon its back the burdens of remorse (nadam), and guide it through the desert plains of fear (khawf), so that you may turn it back to the path of repentance (tawba) and contrition (inaba).

 Repentance is not acceptable save from one who feels perplexed at his concerns, and grief-stricken at heart due to what has befallen him."
