Jewish Canadians remember Canada policy on Jewish immigration from the 1930s: none is too many. We remember the way Japanese Canadians were interned and stripped of citizenship in the 1940s. There are haunting echoes of this discrimination in the new law, Bill C-24, that creates one set of rules for Old Stock Canadians who can never be deported, no matter what crimes they commit, and another set of rules for Canadians who either possess, or could be eligible for, a second citizenship. They can be stripped of their citizenship for committing certain crimes even if they are convicted in countries with no respect for democracy and the rule of law. Lets be clear. We have no sympathy for criminals and terrorists. All Canadians convicted of a crime deserve to be sentenced. Yet we believe it is absurd to apply different rules to Canadians who commit the same crime, based on where they or their families were born. This is discrimination, baked right into the law that is supposed to treat us all as equals. https://www.thestar.com/opinion/commentary/2015/10/14/new-law-makes-canadian-jews-second-class-citizens.html |

(And here's an actual live link to the story that abuayisha was quoting: https://www.thestar.com/opinion/commentary/2015/10/14/new-law-makes-canadian-jews-second-class-citizens.html.)
Just to be clear, Bill C-24 did not specifically target Jews. The law was intended to tighten up the rules for immigrants to obtain Canadian citizenship, and to give the government the power to revoke citizenship of new Canadians convicted of terrorism. It just happens that Israel's so-called Law of Return "gives an almost automatic right of Israeli residency and citizenship to any Jew." This makes it very easy to deport Jews to Israel, even if they have never lived there. But yeah, most Canadians didn't like Bill C-24 (or a bunch of other xenophobic laws and regulations) much either. That's part of the reason we just threw Steven Harper out of office. Score one for democracy! |

According to Sharia law Jews and Christians are second-class citizens in a Sunni califate. Shiites and Yazidis are not even third-class citizens. They are thought criminals and have to be killed.

When Europe was violently persecuting Jews for their religious belief, it was the Andalusia "caliphate" which offered safe harbor and allowed for Jews to freely practice their faith. And there is no concept of second or third class citizenship, when "jizah" is properly understood.
The point of the thread was to show how laws written with the intention of marginalizing one religious group has unintended consequences for others. It's the old "canary in a coal mine" warning or admonition. Edited by abuayisha - 16 November 2015 at 8:29am |

Properly understood? I don't buy that. Muslims were the rulers, like that white South Africans were during the time of apartheid. Andalusia cannot be a model for todays world. |

Sure it can given there is no caliphate in existence today. Although I do understand it can't be model because it doesn't fit your narrative paradigm. |

The caliphate can't be a model for today, because it supports discrimination.

It does not support discrimination as you understand discrimination of today's society. This is simply yet another scare tactic Islamophobes commonly repeat without having proper knowledge and understanding of Islamic jurisprudence.
