Papal support
What? Protests over cartoons Who? Pope Benedict XVI Why? He believes freedom of expression (speech) should not tresspass on the freedom of others. VATICAN CITY: Pope Benedict XVI expressed support on Thursday for peaceful demonstrations in the Muslim world against the publication of caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad, the Lebanese Prime Minister said after meeting with the pontiff. Prime Minister Fuad Saniora, who is Muslim, said he and the Pope discussed the cartoons as well as Lebanon's intention to bring to justice those who instigated violent attacks against them. "He expressed (the view) that freedom in no way should really trespass on the freedom of others," Saniora said. Saniora said he told the Pope that Muslims should have the right to express their anger about the caricatures peacefully. "And the pope was very supportive of the peaceful expression of opinion in the Arab world, the Muslim world because he condemns himself, as well, the efforts that are being made by others to trespass on the freedom and the convictions of other people," Saniora said. He said the Lebanese government found violent demonstrations unacceptable and that authorities were "pursuing this matter to the fullest and those who really committed these crimes are going to be brought to justice." The Vatican has previously said the cartoons represented an "unacceptable provocation," and that the right to freedom of expression (speech) cannot entail the right to offend the religious sentiments of believers." Saniora also met The Vatican No.2, Cardinal Angelo Sodano. In a statement after the meetings, Vatican spokesman Joaquin Navarro-Valls said the situation in West Asia and in Lebanon was raised and that both sides underlined "the need to work to educate people in reconciliation and peace, in respect for human rights and in particular, religious rights." A Danish newspaper's publication of the cartoons set off violent for international protests.
ROME: Italy's Foreign Minister said the members of the government should avoid provoking Muslims, two days after another Cabinet minister said he planned to wear T-Shirts featuring the Prophet Muhammad cartoons that sparked international protests around the world. "In a moment so difficult and delicate for the relationship between the European Union and the Islamic, Arab world, everyone, especially the ministers, have to observe serious and responsible behavious," Gianfranco Fini said at a news conference following talks with his Spanish counterpart, Miguel Angel Moratinos. Reforms minister Roberto Calderoli reportedly said on Tuesday he planned to wear T-Shirts with some of the cartoons. Calderoli is a leader of the Nothern League, a regional party with anti-immigrant stance. "Whatever behaviour of provocation that could sound offensive for any religion has to stigmatized,"Fini said in response to a question about Calderoli's statements. Premier Silvio Berlusconi reportedly called Calderoli after the minister first made the statements to tell him he completely disagreed with his plan to wear the T-Shirts. Calderoli has called it a personal initiative and said it does not represent the position of the Premier or the government. |

Exactly, he talked without thinking about the consequences. However, he seems very professional to wear the T-Shirt. Sad..sad..

This topic is going to be a month old soon. Where is the pest or rather my shadow? Why Liberty is not responding to what Pope had said about the Freedom of Speech? Where is ****Tomato Ketchup? What happen to their massive silent? ***Sister Pauline, please try not to insult anyone even if they don't show the best of manners in posting. Not only does it violate the forum guidelines but it gives a bad impression of the Muslims who post here. Try to keep in mind that sometimes non-Muslims come here to prove to themsevles that Muslims (and hence Islam) are what they have heard and seen in the media.*** Edited by Khadija1021 |
