How do we know for sure?

   How do we know for sure?
Dear my Muslim and non-muslim friends and brothers,

I have a question regarding the orrigins of Islam.  It is my understanding that Muhamad was approached by an angel who called him to the message that eventually became the heart and soul of the Islamic faith.  Please forgive me for my ignorance, but how do we know that the angel was indeed Gabriel, an angel from Allah?  We have the angel's claim, and we have Muhamad's claim, but honestly, how do we really know beyond these two claims?
