Anyone who has read the Hebrew Bible knows that God instituted the sacrifice of animals for atonement of sins.  There were many such sacrifices mentioned in the Jewish Scriptures.

Do Muslims do this, too?  If not, why not?

George,

Can you go a bit slow and not open too many topics. I am very busy these days.

I miss your banging the headboard emoticon.

OK, sorry.  If I can get the banging the headboard emoticon to work on this site, I will do a little banging head stuff.

Do people have a sense of humor here?

Do not Muslims sacrifice animals at the end of the haj?

Bismillah,

Guys, look up hajj and animal sacrifice on the Islamicity's main page.  There is a lot of information you can read about out there.  Then come back and discuss it.

I believe the sacrifices at the end of the haj are related to pre-Islamic traditions, although today they have a new meaning - right?

Ali Baba,

The sacrifice at the end of the Hajj is only to re-enact that act of Abraham, when instead of letting him slaughter his son, God provided a ram (goat) nearby for him. I am sure you know that the Bible talks about the ram.

Muhammad simply restored that practise when he followed all the rituals carried out by Abraham.
