As-Salaam alaikum,
"Knowledge (ilm) calls out to praxis (aml), but if the latter dos not respond, knowledge will go away." [Al-Suhrawardi, trans. Milson 1975]. Thus Suhrawardi advises the student to observe and emulate his master's habits in hygiene, performance of rituals, dress and the practice of austerity. The concept of Sunnah itself is based on the belief that the habits, gestures and even tastes and preferences of the Prophet Muhammad, Sallallahu alaihi Wasallam, were a form of revelation containing important moral content complementary to the Qur'anic speech and/or injunctions. In fact, majority of the 'Ulama in Islam view the akhlaq (character disposition, nature) of the awliya as both part of Allah's revelation and the means of reaching Him, by making a clear connection between the akhlaq of the masters and the Sunnah of the Prophet, Sallallahu alaihi Wasallam:-- "The character (akhlaq) of the masters have been polished through their perfection in modeling themselves after the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. They are the most successful of people in revivifying his Sunnah, in all that he commanded and commissioned, censured and enjoined." [Suhrawardi, Adab al-Muridin, 380, as cited in Malamud 1996:93].
