Dear All,
I debate with my friends over the translation of this ayah, 79:30. I always use Islamicity source when it comes to Quranic Verses, and the translation is as follow: 79:30 And after that, the earth: wide has He spread its expanse, Topics discussed in this Verse: [Creation] [Earth:spread out] [Signs in creation] Waalarda baAAda thalika dahaha وَالْأَر 18;ضَ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ دَحَاهَا "God made the earth egg-shaped" Since the new meaning is very different than the translation I've got from this site. I get confused. I don't speak Arabic and the friends said that Dahaha comes from a root word that means "Egg-shaped". I am sure many of people here come from Arabic countries or very fluent in Arabic, so I really need the help to overcome my confusion. If the translation of my friends is correct, then I think Islamicity needs to change the verse's translation. Please help me. Lamp lighter |

Dear Anne Marie,
So, it means that the translation "extended" is wrong then Lamp Lighter |

Lamp Lighter Salam I cannot really say that because I do not speak arabic. However I do recall Dr. Badawi saying that when we finally got to see Earth from space they determined it was not completely round but oblongish eggish shape. Translation I have learned is a challenge as even in english many words can have different meanings and be used in a variety of ways and I am assuming arabic may be the same. Anne Marie |

Hi Lamp Lighter, There is no talk of egg-shape or oval-shape or or a pear-shape in the verse 79:30. What it means is that God made the Earth so vast by spreading out that even being a sphere, it has such a vast surafce area that can accomodate oceans, rivers, mountains, water, vegetation, landscape, beauty, etc. Dahaha means here, stretched or spread. If I may speak briefly...There are several opinions regarding this issue. One "Earth" as it is implied from a "gencentric" position is an expanse and perhaps it is talking about the land itself not the Earth as a planet. as brother BMZP noted...which I overlooked just now LOL |

So the other position is "egg-centric"? |

Israfil & David,
If the earth were really egg-shaped the wobbling might have been real bad. |
