 would someone enlighten me on the relationship between "good deeds" and "heaven".   do we have to perform good deeds to gain access to heaven or is belief in Islam enough?

In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful.

By (the Token of) Time (through the ages),

Verily Man is in loss,

Except such as have Faith, and do righteous deeds,

 and (join together) in the mutual teaching of Truth,

 and of Patience and Constancy.

(Quran chapter 103)

So basicaly you have to do good and strive to be good. Your good deads have to outnumber your sins. Allah forgives the sins but your good deads have to be more than your sins. In Islam, if you sin, your sin is recorded as one. But if you do a good dead Allah in his infinite mercy and love multiplies it by a minimum of ten. (He is helping us so that our good deads will be more than our sins).

Allah, the exalted, has said: Oh son of Adam, if you come to Me with an earthful of defaults and meet Me, not associating anything with Me (partners) , I would come to you with an earthful of forgiveness. (Hadith Qudsi).

he has also said:

(God does not judge you according to your appearance and your wealth, but He looks at your hearts and looks into your deeds.)

he has also said:

(A man walking along a path felt very thirsty.  Reaching a well, he descended into it, drank his fill, and came up.  Then he saw a dog with its tongue hanging out, trying to lick up mud to quench its thirst.  The man said, This dog is feeling the same thirst that I felt.  So he went down into the well again, filled his shoe with water, and gave the dog a drink.  So, God thanked him and forgave his sins.}  The Prophet was asked, Messenger of God, are we rewarded for kindness towards animals?  He said: {There is a reward for kindness to every living animal or human.}

So basically we are rewaded on every good thing we do. Even a smile is an act of charity in Islam and whenever you do charity, your sins are forgiven. Any good thing you say is also a form of charity, so also your sins are forgiven.

Hope this answered your question.

God has said in the Quran:

 And give good news (O Muhammad) to those who believe and do good deeds, that they will have gardens (Paradise) in which rivers flow....  (Quran, 2:25)

God has also said:

 Race one with another for forgiveness from your Lord and for Paradise, whose width is as the width of the heavens and the earth, which has been prepared for those who believe in God and His messengers....  (Quran, 57:21)

The Prophet Muhammad  told us that the lowest in rank among the dwellers of Paradise will have ten times the like of this world,1 and he or she will have whatever he or she desires and ten times like it. Also, the Prophet Muhammad  said: {A space in Paradise equivalent to the size of a foot would be better than the world and what is in it.}  He also said: {In Paradise there are things which no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no human mind has thought of.} He also said: {The most miserable man in the world of those meant for Paradise will be dipped once in Paradise.  Then he will be asked, Son of Adam, did you ever face any misery?  Did you ever experience any hardship?  So he will say, No, by God, O Lord!  I never faced any misery, and I never experienced any hardship.}

If you enter Paradise, you will live a very happy life without sickness, pain, sadness, or death; God will be pleased with you; and you will live there forever.  God has said in the Quran:

 But those who believe and do good deeds, We will admit them to gardens (Paradise) in which rivers flow, lasting in them forever....  (Quran, 4:57)
