I was married under islamic law. however, the sheikh did not get us to sign any papers. Is this usual? I would like to know if signing papers is compulsory as I would like to make it legal under Australian law. thanks!!

No, usually it is a contract on paper that includes many specifics like the date, names, place, names of the witnesses, conditions of the marriage etc. The bride and broom sign this contract as an agreement to it.

I am not sure of australian law, but almost every country (islamic or not) needs a paper that shows that you are married. In many countries, the couple needs to get a marriage license and also need to register the marriage for it to become recognised by the state. This is the norm and unless Australia is a huge exception, you need to start working to get some paperwork done.
