Modern Qur'ans are in the wrong order, with Al Fatihah as the first surah and Al Baqarah as the second. The order does matter if you want to truly understand the Qur'an, which was sent down progressively to Muhammad over many years so that Muhammad could warn Mecca before his people were destroyed. Muhammad followed the same pattern as the other seven past prophets whose stories were repeated often in the Qur'an - Noah, Hud, Salih, Abraham, Lot, Shu'ayb, and Moses. They all warned their own people before their people were destroyed by God for their wrongdoing, and their stories were left as reminders for the later peoples. Muhammad warned Mecca, and after they had denied him and evicted him, God commanded Muhammad to destroy them.
But in the typical order with Al Baqarah as the second surah, fighting begins right away, this makes it look like Muslims are to always be fighting, hence misunderstandings like terrorism arise. But in the revealed order of the Qur'an, the first 86 surahs have no fighting at all because Muhammad is only warning his people before their destruction. It is not until the 87th revealed surah (Al Baqarah), where fighting is first commanded, after Muhammad had been denied and evicted by his own people. If anyone wants to truly understand the Qur'an and the pattern it followed with the messengers, then they should read the Qur'an in the order of revelation, which can be read here: Arabic: English:
