As salamou 'aleykoum
My question is first and foremost a grammatical one. Apart from any exegetical and traditional consideration, does the verse in 7:20 have a single possible translation or can it have a second one? وَقَالَ مَا نَهَىٰكُمَا رَبُّكُمَا عَنْ هَٰذِهِ ٱلشَّجَرَةِ إِلَّآ £َن تَكُونَا مَلَكَيْنِ £َوْ تَكُونَا مِنَ ٱلْخَٰلِدِينَ The classic translation is as follows: Your Lord forbade you from this tree only lest ye should become angels or become of the immortals. From a purely grammatical point of view, can this verse also be translated as follows: Your Lord forbids you this tree unless you become angels or immortals. Is it a grammatical possibility, or is only the first translation possible? Sincerely. |
