    Posted: 29 August 2010 at 5:40pm
Good day everyone.  I just enrolled on this site yesterday as a result of a recent desire to learn about Islam.  I have started reading english translations of quran and hadith, and am starting to form some questions from my reading.

1) As I understand the translation of the word Islam, I understand it to mean "Surrender, or submission, to god".  Is that a correct translation?  Is there a distinction here between surrendering to god and surrendering to Allah?  (more to this question in #2).

2) Allah is the word that represents the god of Islam.  When translated, literally, Allah means god in english.  Alas, my understanding is that the god of Islam is the same as the god of Christianity which is the same god as Judaism, albeit the differences being that we all have different messengers (aka prophets) and interpretations of gods word?  Is this a fair and accurate statement, or am I WAY off base?

3) I have read the english translations of quran Al-Fatiha, Al-Baqara and most of Al-E-Imran and a few other versus from others when cited in some of my reading.  My question are in the context of the word we here in media, 'Infidel', I have yet to read that word.  Does the quran refer to infidels?

4)  Although I have yet to encounter the word 'Infidel', the term non-believer is very prevelant.  Can you please describe to me how muslims interpret 'Non-believer'?  My current understanding is that a non-believer is someone who does not believe in Allah, and from question # 1 if Allah and god are one in the same, if I believe in god do I also believe in Allah?  Or must I be committed to the teachings of quran before I can claim I am a believer of Allah?

I read in the Koran that Muslims will wear silk in Paradise.

But in this world Muslim men can't wear silk. Why is that?

I saw this phrase on another Islamis website:I seek refuge with Allah, The Hearing, The Knowing from the cursed Satan, from his coercion, lures to arrogance and poems. What does"poems" mean?

Hello Malucy

Welcome to Islamicity, Wishing you a very happy stay. Thanks for posting your questions. Apologies for being late to respond

Regarding your first question - , the word Islam which is an arabic word  means submission or surrender however, it was derived from the root word salam. From this root word, you can also derive the words peace and safety. Many people feel that Islam implies some sort of enslavement to Allah, but others find it more helpful to define the word Islam as surrender.

Many religions have a concept of surrender to God. In Jewish history, when the ancient Hebrews obeyed Gods commands, they had a long period of prosperity and stability.

In Christianity, surrendering to God is a way of putting your life into more capable hands in fact, Jesus asked many of his disciples to surrender their livelihoods and follow him.

So, if we look at the word Islam in this way, we can understand why obeying Allahs commands and trusting in Allahs wisdom could bring about peace for a Muslim.

The word does not represent a one-sided relationship, where the believer is enslaved to Allah. Rather, the word Islam indicates a covenant between Allah and his followers, where a Muslim surrenders his or her will to Allah in return for peace or safety.
