What is the difference  between Islam and Muslim? I had a course "Intro to Religion" in college which stated that the Islam/Muslim people are very peaceful. How can some terrorist groups say that they do such terrible things in the name of Allah? It has been very confusing to me.

Hei Keith, welcome to IC forum.

Islam is the name of the religion. Muslim is the follower of the religion. There is always bad apple in any religion. Terrorist group have it's own agenda, they do it for their own agenda, not necessary for Islam or for Allah even if they mention so. There are some usually youngster that misguided and brand washed by "the master mind (the owner of the agenda)" so they thought they do it for Islam or for Allah.
Salam/Peace,

If I may ask a follow up question?
I was born Christian and we all can notice how many different "versions or strings" of Christianity there are, all with their own set of churches, rules and beliefs.
Your comment above refers to -what the West would refer to as- extremist on one hand and true Muslim followers, who are genuine and peaceful, on the other hand.
My question therefore is:
Are there different strings of the Islam religion like there are in other religions?
(many non-muslim people have been made to understand that the extremism IS part of the religion for some muslim who have chosen to follow that path, but you suggest they are (mis)using the religion and therefore not part of it. Is that correct?)

In Islam, we have a Quran and hadeeths (the prophet Muhammad sayings and actions) that be used as ultimate source of Islamic teachings. Even if we have the same sources, we do have some version of interpretation, but mostly on branches idea not on the main idea. So in Islam there 4 major school of thoughts (Hanafi, Shafii, Hambali, Maliki), that name taken from the author of the school of thoughts. However we muslim can choose, mix and match which parts of the teaching from that 4 schools that she/he feel comfortable with.

Yes, there are some individuals and groups that twist the meaning of Quran/hadith to justify their act that against the humanity. Humanity is actually the center core of Islamic value. So we consider them as "the bad apple" of Islamic follower or misguided muslim. Some even consider them can not be consider as muslim anymore, the consequence is they don't have the right to be treated as muslim when they die, such as how we bury them etc.
