I read about naskh (abrogation) recently, but the explanation was rather confusing. I also checked some online resources and it seems as if the concept is quite controversial.

Can someone explain in simple terms what naskh is all about?

While the revelation was taking place, certain injunctions came in stages to make the compliance easy for the reverts to stay the course!
For example the prohibition of intoxicants came in stages!
4:43 (Asad) O YOU who have attained to faith! Do not attempt to pray while you are in a state of drunkenness,
Then
comes 5:90 (Y. Ali) O ye who believe! intoxicants and gambling, (dedication of) stones, and (divination by) arrows, are an abomination,- of Satan's handwork: eschew such (abomination), that ye may prosper. 5:91 (Y. Ali) Satan's plan is (but) to excite enmity and hatred between you, with intoxicants and gambling, and hinder you from the remembrance of Allah, and from prayer: will ye not then abstain?
Now the part that tolerated the consumption of booze in 4:43 stands abrogated with a warning!
I think it is quite simple to see for a believer!
Controversy comes from the one who doesn't want to follow the specification change! you build the product for the material world according to the latest drawings and specifications by the designer or you don't make it!
2:106 (Picktall) Such of Our revelations as We abrogate or cause to be forgotten, we bring (in place) one better or the like thereof. Knowest thou not that Allah is Able to do all things?
