List of Internet phenomena

.................................

Leeroy Jenkins, sometimes mis-spelled Leroy Jenkins and often elongated with numerous additional letters, is an Internet phenomenon named for a character created by player Ben Schultz in Blizzard Entertainment's popular MMORPG, World of Warcraft. The character has become popular thanks to a machinima video of the game that circulated around the Internet. The phenomenon has since spread beyond the boundaries of the gaming community into other online and mainstream media.

This Internet phenomenon started with the release of a video clip online to the World of Warcraft forums. The video was released by the World of Warcraft Alliance player guild "Pals for Life" on the Laughing Skull PvP realm. It features a group of players discussing a detailed battle strategy for an area known as the Blackrock Spire while one of their number, Leeroy, is away from his computer. Their plan is ruined when Leeroy returns and, ignorant of the strategy, immediately charges headlong into battle shouting a prolonged cry of his own name. His subsequent actions ruin the meticulous plan and the encounter ends in disaster for the group.

An article in the August 2005 issue of PC Gamer UK, entitled "The Ballad of Leeroy Jenkins", claims that the original video was designed as a negative commentary on the kind of "nerd-guilds" that meticulously and statistically plan out raids with all the seriousness of an actual combat strategy the way Leeroy's guild was apparently doing. Leeroy is in fact the hero of the piece, acting against the geekiness of his guild.[1]

Chuck Norris Facts are satirical facts about martial artist and actor Chuck Norris that have become an Internet phenomenon and as a result have become widespread in popular culture. The facts are normally absurd hyperbolic claims about Norris's toughness, attitude, virility, "alpha male status," sophistication and masculinity, for example:

If you can see Chuck Norris, Chuck Norris can see you. If you can't see Chuck Norris, you may only have seconds to live.

The facts typically claim that Chuck Norris is some type of irate, all-powerful superbeing. The Chuck Norris facts have spread around the world, leading not only to translated versions, but also spawning localized versions mentioning country-specific advertisements and other Internet phenomena. Allusions are also sometimes made to his use of roundhouse kicks to perform seemingly any task, his large amount of body hair with specific regard to his beard, and his role in the action television series Walker, Texas Ranger.

Norris's response

Chuck Norris responded to the Chuck Norris Facts on his official website, chucknorris.com, with a statement. He was generally surprised and flattered by the attention. Admitting some of the statements were indeed humorous, he tries not to take any of them seriously, and he hopes that such statements will interest people in real facts about Chuck Norris contained in his literary works. [2] On October 23, 2006, Chuck Norris' first column for WorldNetDaily consisted of yet another response. It began similarly to the above quote from chucknorris.com, but then disclaimed Norris' own prowess in favor of God and Jesus Christ.

One of the satirical facts made of Norris states that "There is no theory of evolution. Just a list of creatures Chuck Norris has allowed to live." Upon hearing this, Chuck replied:

It's funny. It's cute. But here's what I really think about the theory of evolution: It's not real. It is not the way we got here. In fact, the life you see on this planet is really just a list of creatures God has allowed to live. We are not creations of random chance. We are not accidents. There is a God, a Creator, who made you and me. We were made in His image, which separates us from all other creatures.

By the way, without Him, I don't have any power. But with Him, the Bible tells me, I really can do all thingsand so can you.[3]

Norris appeared in a 2007 commercial for Mountain Dew where he had his revenge on the two fictional webmasters of a popular site that featured Norris in a humorous light, undoubtedly a reference to the Chuck Norris Facts meme.[4] However, in December 2007, Norris sued when these statements were published in book form by Penguin in November of the same year.[5]

Shakeel Bhat A Muslim activist whose face became a personification of angry Islamism in western media.

Shakeel Ahmad Bhat[1] (born around 1978[2]), labeled as Islamic Rage Boy by Western media, is a Kashmiri Muslim activist who has been on photographs on the frontpages of many newspapers and has become a cult figure on the Internet. He has been featured in newspapers such as Agence France-Presse,[3] the Times of India,[4] Middle East Times,[5] France 24.[6] and Sunday Mail[2]

He was born into Sufi family in Kashmir[2]. At the age of ten he became a school dropout because he had problems learning to read and write[2]. Around 1990, during a raid on Shakeel's home, Indian police threw his sister Shareefa out of an upstairs window; she broke her spine and died from her injuries four years later.[2]

At the age of 13 he joined pro-Pakistan rebel group and was a militant from 1991 to 1994.[3] He claims he was not a good militant and has never killed anybody.[2]

He lives in Kashmir, where he is often participating in Muslim protests. Due to his angry look, he is often photographed by journalists. He took part in protests against the Indian Army, Israel, Pope Benedict, Salman Rushdie, and the Muhammed cartoons.[7] After dropping out of school, he became a militant fighting against Indian forces in Kashmir. He was captured and spent three years in prison.[3] He claims that he has been detained almost 300 times since 1997.[3]

The term "Islamic Rage Boy" was first used in September of 2006. Using Bhat as inspiration, The Nose On Your Face created an illustrated, prototypical Islamic Rage Boy who has sung in satirical videos, offered guidance to other Muslims via an advice column, and dispensed an exaggerated, extremist form of Islamic justice where ever he goes.

Bhat, and Islamic Rage Boy, were discussed by members of The Nose On Your Face on the BBC several times in July of 2007.

He was featured in numerous blogs and articles by Christopher Hitchens,[8] Robert Spencer,[9] Kathleen Parker,[10] Michelle Malkin,[11] and others. On various blogs, he was photoshopped as Aerosmith singer Steven Tyler or as an opera singer,[12][13]. His picture has also been printed on T-Shirts, posters, mouse-pads and beer mugs.[3][14]

When he was shown a photoshopped image that appeared in the internet, of his face superimposed on a pig, he reacted: "I surely get hurt when I see these pictures. This is terrorism for me. The people who do this are showing their own culture, so why do they tell us that we are uncivilised?"[2]

Star Wars kid

"Star Wars kid" is an Internet phenomenon which started when a fourteen-year-old French Canadian male high school student filmed himself wielding a golf ball retriever like a lightsaber in a similar fashion to that of Darth Maul. This video clip was found by some of his classmates and shared online using Kazaa, a peer-to-peer client. The child in the videos was taunted and criticized by his peers, which eventually led to a lawsuit. Estimated at over 900 million views, the "Star Wars kid" video was one of the most popular videos on the Internet of its time.

Tourist guy

The tourist guy, also known as the accidental tourist (a joking reference to the novel and film The Accidental Tourist), Waldo (a reference to the Where's Waldo? franchise), WTC Guy, or tourist of death, is an Internet phenomenon consisting of a photograph of a tourist that has appeared in many photoshopped pictures after the September 11, 2001 attacks.
