Hello everyone,

I am a non-Arabic speaking Muslim who is seeking more clarification on Surah 2 Verse 187 in the Holy Qur'an. I am specifically interested in finding out if the fast is to be broken at sunset, night fall, or night. Different translations of the Holy Qur'an mention various translations of this particular verse. I have always thought that the fast is to be broken at sunset, but I am now starting to wonder if it's actually at night (ater the fifth prayer). I am very interested in learning what the exact translation is. Any help provided will be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Dear brother,
I was positively surprised when I saw your question, because I asked myself the same question some times ago :), and that means also that you are someone who seeks the truth.

Therefore I wanted to make the effort to share with you what I actually found on this issue under the light of the Coran.
Please bear in mind that this is my actual personal position and I kindly invite you to verify all information within for yourself as commanded by God in 17:36, and remember that simply none is the prudent/forethoughtful answer to Gods question in 45:6.

In any case the translation is the following:
2:187, "Permitted for you is sexual intercourse with your wives during the night of fasting...You may eat and drink until the white thread (of light) becomes distinguishable from the black thread at dawn. Then, you shall fast until the night..."

here we see :"until the night" which means when night start.

so the question now is when does night start, the Coran answer this question in chapter 36 verse 37 (YaSin).

Basically and to make it short night start at sunset (doesn't mean complete darkness).
And daytime start when the white thread (of light) becomes distinguishable from the black thread at dawn (doesn't mean complete daytlight).
Here you can read in more details on the issue:

And Allah is the best knower.
God bless you.
