Hi all
Apologies if this has been covered before or if posted in the wrong place, but I would like to discuss why people seem to follow certain rules of Islam and not others.

I am aware of the 5 pillars, and I know of people who for example follow rules such as eating only halal meat and avoiding alcohol, but don't always keep their fasts or do all prayers. From my point of view as a newbie (I'm still just learning) I wonder why people don't focus energy on the pillars of the faith and then do what they can in addition as opposed to what I described above.

Maybe I should be asking them in stead, and I can guess at many differnet factors influencing them, and it is very personal, but I just wanted to see what others thought!

I want to know what are the most important "rules" basically, and it seems to me they would be the pillars??  Thanks in advance for any comments!

Salam/Peace,

I agree with you, we should perfected the 5 pillars, before focusing on others. However in Islam there is a concept that if you can not do it fully (perfectly) doesn't mean you should ignore/leave it all together.

For example if you can not do 5 daily prayers regularly, it doesn't  mean you can rude to other people. You still need need to be nice to other people even if "being nice to those people" is not part of the 5 pillars. The teaching of Islam in mathematical concept we call it "commutative principle", it doen't  mater which part that you do first.

There was a story during prophet time: There was a man that came to the prophet, he wanted to be Muslim, but he loved to do bad things such as drinking alcohol and committed adultery. The prophet didn't ask him to do 5 daily prayers, charity etc, as the first thing to do, but just asked to be truthful (not to lie).

Anyway, so we should try to adopt all Islamic teaching as much as we can, no mater  it's part of the 5 pillars or on which order, however yes I agree that we as Muslim have to do as much effort as possible to complete the 5 pillars, to be consider as real muslims.

You're right, not all muslims follow all the rules, this could be for any number of reason.  All we can do is try and make an effort to make each day better than the previous by doing that little bit more to follow in the footsteps of the Prophet pbuh
