Asalamu Alaikum

Im the vice president of the MSA in my college. We are planning for the next semester, and I would really like the input of the non-believers, and input of new reverts and born muslims in regards to the events that we may hold to guide the people to Islam.  Also, I would like everyone to post a good topic for a lecture. A little background of my college to  help you decide a better topic...  My college is primarily dominated by republicans and christians. A great number of ROTC students are the majority of students in this unversity.

So please, I'd like to know what you think would be a good topic for a lecture, and what kind of events would be beneficial to the muslim community here.

Jazakallah Khair
Ma'Salama,
Hamid

Assalamu alaikum,

Brother, my advice would be to concentrate on the commonalities rather than the differences, this is usually more appealing to non-Muslims.  By this I mean things like the fact that we all worship the same God, just in different ways, we have common prophets and messengers, and so on.

As well, you might want to get across the fact that we are very family oriented and love to give charity and work towards a better society for all.

May Allah reward you for the work you do to help open the eyes of others.

Peace, ummziba.

Sticks and stones may break my bones, but your words...they break my soul ~

Assalamu Alaikum:

In most on the Universities here in D/FW the MSA's usually hold at least one community Iftar during Ramadan where everyone is invited and the Muslim students or their families cooked dishes from their native country. Sometimes you can contact the Muslim owned restaurants in the area and explain what you are doing and ask them to donate food. This always seems to get a good response.

Also, at a few of the Universities they had a Hijab Solidarity Day, in which the women explained Hijab and many non-Muslim students wore them for a day just to see what it was like.

They have also had movie screenings of different Islamically themes movies: The Message, Malcolm X, some of the PBS documentaries on Islam. With a Q&A afterwards.

It is only with the heart that one can see clearly, what is essential is invisible to the eye. (The Little Prince)

I support sis Ummizba's suggestion. Concentrate on commonalities rather than differences. After all, whole purpose is to submit to God and not submit to 'Muslims'.

Digital,

There is a good video called Three Faiths: One God....you can buy it from most PBS stations.

http://www.kuen.org Has it for sale.

Topics on Islam should include, The Pillars of Islam, Women in Islam (many of us nonbelievers get alot of bad info on this), perhaps History of Islam and an explaination of the differences in different groups of Islam.

Other topics could be contributions from Muslim philosophers, scientists and mathematicans.  Poetry and music.

I like the idea of the Hijab solidarity day and Eid party.  Another site that could help is  http://www.prohijab.org
