Is Jihad a reasonable name in Islam.  Is it really appropriate?

Assalamu alaikum,

Jihad means strive for the best. However due to the "recent events", jihad have bad connotation.
So to me you are OK to use it, you might able to change the image of "jihad" by your action.

to strive for the best fits me well, but like u said the extremist groups are using jihad to mean 'holy war'.

Also, Semar since you are from America as well i want to ask you if you know many american muslims

Assalmau alaikum,

Yes, I know many American Muslims. If you want to get more young Muslim friends, you can attend conferences like ISNA (you can see the schedule www.isna.net) conference, ICNA (www.icna.org), MAS (www.masnet.org). On those conferences there are many session specifically for youth.  Usually they do it on long weekend holiday, such thanks giving, memorial, Christmas, labor day etc.
Usually they have thousands attendees. Insha Allah you will enjoy it.
