The concept of cultural Purity comes from the egoism of a particular culture in which the teachings endowed in the family consist of the isolation of one indiivudal in that culture from another to sustain the "bloondline" or "purity" of the line. There are perhaps many members on IC who live in cultures like that. But when we look at the concept of cultural purity what do we mean by a pure bloodline? Of course there are many reasons why parents instill in their children the importance of marrying within ones own culture. The most common is the language and the adaptation of culture. Many say that its important to have a family of the same culture because it continues the line of that culture and prevents any misunderstanding. Other reasons are that its because the parents instill those teachings and the consequences are too great to reject when a child reaches an age of reason. Unfortunately I have to dispel the myths of culture purity here on IC rather than a great forum where many could here. First off, no culture on God's planet is pure thanks to human evolution. Science has proven that the first humans can from Central Africa over 100,000 years back dating from the beginning stages (Homo Erectus) to the splitting stages (Neanderthals). Humans from Central Africa were of dark complexion who were "apelike" but walked upright (hence the name Homo Erectus (Erectus meaning upright). After some years these people migrated from Central Africa outwards to the eastern continents and from there split into various families. From there these entities not only adapted to the cold and wet environments but also grew into systems of individual class i.e. Cultures which had their own unique way of life and behavior. As migration grew and as the Ice Ages past humans came later (Science believe throught the interaction of the Homo Erectus and Neanderthals) to migrate of the the great sheet of ice which was the Pacific Ocean towards the Americas. My Point? My point is the same as the point of Allah when he says that man was created into various cultures. The part where egoism comes from is that cultures intentionally and unintentionally isolate themselves with family doctrine by presupposing that knowledge of their culture is diffuclt and complex if mixing began thus the remedy to prevent such a mishap would not date or interact, but of course not all cultures presubscribe to that. In Islam, God teaches that mankind is of one being, one species. No culture is not pure and no man or woman should be judged based on what culture or what tribe they associate from. Unfortunately we as Muslims must adhere to this precious understanding in which God has crystallized in his glorious Qur'an. I hope the apprehension of this principle sinks in the later generations because as people we need to understand that cultural purity is nothing more that a fallible illusion in the ego of the human mind. |

I like this post, bother Israfil, perhaps because the concept of cultural purity is an enigma to me. I would be considered a cultural/ethnic "mongrel" by cultural purists as my blood runs with at least six different 'bloodlines'. This is very common in the west as intermarriage (religious, ethnic, cultural) is very common here. I see this as a good thing. My dear friend, an Egyptian by birth, feels sad that her Canadian children will probably not marry Egyptians. This is puzzling to me as I do not understand the emotions behind it. I have heard this analogy somewhere before: cultural/ethnic purity is like a garden of flowers all the same, same shape, same colour, same characteristics; cultural/ethnic intermixing creates a garden of diversity, different shapes, different colours, different characteristics. Myself, as a gardener, I would much prefer to walk in the second garden! Peace, ummziba. |
