I'm curious why there are more female reverts to Islam vs. male. I'm thinking it's because it's because most of these women are marrying a Muslim man and revert to the religion.

I think since, Islam is the only religion which speaks of woman, uplifts women by giving her all the rights she deserves. And yes, "Hijab " is also an important factor for reverting. So perhaps these things bring them closer to Islam and when they study more out of curiosity, then there misconceptions shed, thus they embrace Islam. I don't think so that they embrace islam for the sake of getting married. One or two may be an exception. BUt mostly they embrace only when they study Islam. We have many reverts here. May be there opinions shall, matter you more.

ASA,
Megatron, I just wanted to ask how did you come up with your theory of marrying into Islam?
In the Quran' it says many places that Allah is the one that opens someones heart to accept Islam or closes it if he wills so that they will never be able to embrace it.
I like what br. Seekshidayath had to say.
I took Shahada and accepted Islam before I married my husband. At the time marriage was not even a thought in my mind as I was just finishing HighSchool and working part-time and making plans for college.
It would be interesting to see what other sr's had to say about your question.

Asalaamu alaikum: I like these excerpts from a web page I was reading: If you want to read the rest, you can find it at: http://www.twf.org/Library/Women.html
HRH, The Prince of Wales, Islam And The West
Islamic countries
like Turkey, Egypt, and Syria gave women the vote as early as Europe
did its women -- and much earlier than in Switzerland! In those
countries women have long enjoyed equal pay, and the opportunity to
play a full working role in their societies. The rights of Muslim women
to property and inheritance, to some protection if divorced, and to the
conducting of business, were rights prescribed by the Quran twelve
hundred years ago, even if they were not everywhere translated into
practice. In Britain at least, some of these rights were novel even to
my grandmother's generation!
Karen Armstrong, Muhammad: A Biography Of The Prophet
Western critics
often blame the Quran for its treatment of women, which they see as
iniquitous, but in fact the emancipation of women was dear to the
Prophet's heart. There are complaints that the Quran teaches a double
standard: the laws of inheritance, for example, decree that a woman can
inherit only half of what her brothers (who have to provide the mahl to
start a new family) will receive. Again, women are allowed to be
witnesses in law, but their witness is only half as valuable as that of
a man. In the context of the twentieth century - when, we should
remember, we are still campaigning for equal rights for women - this
Quranic legislation does seem prohibitive. But in seventh-century
Arabia it was revolutionary. We must remember what life had been like
for women in the pre-Islamic period when female infanticide was the
norm and when women had no rights at all. Like slaves, women were
treated as an inferior species, who had no legal existence. In such a
primitive world, the very idea that a woman could be a witness or could
inherit anything in her own right was astonishing. We must recall that
in Christian Europe, women had to wait until the nineteenth century
before they had anything similar: even then, the law remained heavily
weighted towards men. -- p. 191
Women In Islam Versus Women In The Judaeo-Christian Tradition Why are there
four female converts for every male convert to Islam in the US? This
paper provides clues by examining the teaachings of the three
monotheistic faiths.

The question is why the ladies of western countries are embracing Islam more than the gentlemen of the same countries. There could be many reasons. One main reason has been described above that the religion of Islam is in fact superior to other faiths. BUT that is equal for the men and women. So why the women become Muslimahs in greater number.
I feel that education of men and women is equal in those countries. The men are too busy woking but women may find some time to study things at home. The men are mostly sunk in booze and gambling. They smoke too much and misplay (misbehave) with the wives too much. There being so many divorces (which is not allowed by the catholic church) upsets the family.
The men and the women (as I have seen them in europe) do not marry until they produce a child first. If not successful with one person, they move to to another one. Most of them have done away with the marriage.
It is felt that the ladies feel the pinch of bad social behaviour. They have a fear of the future and intention to avoid troubles. They intend to lead a good moral life and need security. So they look to some solution. That solution they find in Islam more than any where else.
They become attracted due to talk with other muslim ladies too who have a house or family setup with good children. Due to the bad teachings of the other religions, the family setup is all destroyed. People are not really happy with the family matters in non-muslim couples.

Minuteman,
I am disappointed that you feel european men are adulterous drunks! But I can only surmise that it is a generalisation of european western life.
Whilst I agree that this type of behaviour exists, on the whole it is limited to the larger cities. City life is never a good indication of 'real life' . Most country folk are decent, marry, then have children, and the husband looks after his wife and family.
Megatron,
Answering your question. I of course am generalising. But many many British women become muslim after they marry their muslim husband. I can only hope that it is their own free will that makes them revert to Islam.
Fortunately, I became muslim when I was a single parent, and way before I met and married my Pakistani husband. I take great pains to always point this out to otheres, before they put me in the same box as other muslimahs. The highest percentage of British muslim reverts live in the cities. And usually they marry men of a different culture.
You obviously think that women revert to Islam after marriage. Do you have any ideas why this is so?

Yesterday, i happened to read an intresting story of a revert - An Italian actress. She was in her shooting at Egypt and there she was influenced by the teachings of Islam. She found peace in Hijab. Soon after her study and then embracing Islam , she called up her ex-husband, and he too was influenced by its teachings and was now Abdullah. They are now married and lead a peaceful life.

I was brought up fundamental Baptist, but a lot of things didn't make any sense - like we don't like the Catholic Church and all of it's teachings, but they are the ones who pick and chose what went in the Bible. Plus Paul's teachings were just not matching a lot of what Jesus (p) said. I met a Muslim at work and after I got over the fright that he wouldn't 'kill all Americans' - we started debating the two religions. He encouraged me to read the Qur'an and right from the start - it made sense. It was what I was looking for. My husband, however, doesn't believe in anything other than that 'there may be a God', so I certainly don't and can't follow his lead anymore. The churches I have always gone to always had more women than men - usually the man was at home doing something 'manly' like drinking beer in front of the tv watching football.

It is said that Maya Karin is to marry British-born teacher, Steven David Shorthose in Bellagio Italy, 9 August 2008.
Steven David Shorthose has been waiting for this wonderful moment for seven years. What a long period of waiting.
Steve whose Muslims name is Muhammad Ali, has embraced Islam 4 years ago.
It surely makes many wonder why this guy does not come into the
picture or the mainstream news when the gossip between Maya Karin and
Khairy Jamaludin (Malaysias Prime Ministers Son in Law) broke out.
Saiful Bahri will do the honour of
designing Maya Karins wedding dress in Italy, while Radzuan Radzwill

This news show the way round. A british man became muslim to marry a mixed malaysian lady. Hope they are enriching their Islam and blessed with a great life adventure. Passing the trials of dunya to the Garden of Akhirah. Here presto:
9 August 2008 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

I agree that many women come to Islam because it is the only religion that represents women in a decent way - modest.
Since in Islam our relationship with Allah is the true source of status women will never be unequal simply because we are women or choose to raise kids and make no money.
The sad reality is that many women become Muslim through Muslim men - and often not even through marriage! All it takes is one Muslim boyfriend who prays sometimes to spark a girl's interest and then Allah leads her to the truth. I know at least a few girls like this. Often it's Pakistani men, or whatever the predominant culture is.

Assalam Alaikum,
I am a new Muslim since last 3 months. I was a Hindu Iyer Brahmin Girl, married to a Muslim man for the last 14 months, with whom I am in deep and intimate love for last 3 years. Although I continued to be a Hindu after marriage, I was doing Namaz at home along with my sisters in law.
I was also going to temple for worship but I realised slowly that Islam appeals to me more and that I have begun to admire the beauty of Islam and the great position of women in Islam.
The turnaround happened as I got pregnant with 2 babies in my body and I felt that it is gift of Allah through my husband. When I visited temple after getting pregnant, I realised that I was getting angry at myself for wasting my life so far. I rushed to my home , offered Namaz , read Kalma and tore up the image of the diety that I had and stopped worshipping idols.
My husband took me to Masjid and a priest converted me to Muslim. I thank Allah for giving me a chance to lead my life as a pious and devout Muslim.
I also thanked Allah for giving me courage to overcome my initial cultural and social shock. I was a strict vegetarian and revulsed the sight of meat but after becoming pregnant and becoming a muslim, I eat lot of meat including beef also to support the three Muslim lives in me.
I pray to Allah to make me understand the tenets of Islam better.

Hi, Infact my husband or other members of my family never compelled me to submit to Islam. I was a Hindu for almost one year after wedding and used to do Namas as well as do Hindu prayer daily. My husband Saleem Mohd Qureshi used to take me temples whenever I requested. I used to even fast during Hindu religious occassions but simultaneously fulfilling my duties as his loving submissive muslim wife.
Although marriage to a Muslim man is the trigger, I slowly enjoyed Namaz and Islam appealed to me more as complete religion and it is because Islam filled my conscoiusness and before long I decided to become Muslim . Allah is a witness that my conversion is not because of love or force of a Muslim man on me or sex with my Muslim husband.
The day I told my husband about my inner desire to become a muslim woman, he hugged me and expressed thanks to Allah and uttered Kalma in my ears and in my mouth, with full exitement, so I always hear and speak the Islamic prayers. We both offered prayers and I tore away all images of 'gods' and broke the small idol I had into pieces and threw away in dustbin, and made a vow to Allah that I will be a Muslim henceforth.
I beleive that one becomes a Muslim only due to change of heart and complete surrender to the principles of Islam. Other issues may help.

According "IslamiCity Imam", yes about 70 % who took shahada in IslamiCity are women. So, not because they are marrying a muslim man. Majority of those women are single.

Asalaamu aleikum
Well, I'm a female revert, mashallah, who found Islam while single, before I ever met my husband- and Not for the sake of a man or marriage, although I did marry later on. I find it dismaying that many people automatically assume that I reverted for my husband. I understand that some women do just that, but it often seems to me a very shallow commitment- one that's often dropped as soon as the couple divorce and go their separate ways. Embracing Islam is more than just mouthing the Shahada, or being desperate to do anything to please a man at the sake of rejecting your own identity. I think a lot of women are attracted initially to Islam by the special status and respect that is afforded women, by the standards of modesty and decency. This is a different kind of treatment than many of us in the west are used to- we see and feel the failure of "women's lib" and are not content to be reduced to "sex objects" on constant display. Islam is unique in it's concept of construction of femaleness and the relations between men and women. Subhanallah. Of course there are other, spiritual factors at work, but I think these issues I outlined above play more of a role with women reverts than with men.
But, yes, Allah SWT guides whom he wills...
