Jihad : Its Significance and Understanding in Islam

By Shaykh Habib Ali al-Jifri, with translation by Shaykh Hamza Yusuf

Mankind has reached a most critical juncture in its history that urgently demands our attention. The global turmoil of confusion, helplessness, suffering, exploitation, and armed conflict that threatens to engulf the world, must be seen as the macro-cosmic reflections of the imbalances within the human self. The rescuing of humanity from its present condition is the destiny of Islam.

Guidance Media is honored to present a dynamic discourse that offers legal, linguistic, historical, and spiritual explanations into the profound meanings of Jihad in Islam by the acclaimed scholar Habib Ali al-Jifri given at Santa Clara University before a sold out auditorium of students, educators, and concerned people from divers backgrounds. Drawing from the vast wealth of traditional Islamic scholarship, Habib Ali al-Jifri takes us through the current crisis, the industrial revolution, beyond the crusades, and finally to the center of the human self where the most important battle must be fought. Indeed what the world needs now more than ever is Jihad.

Murabit, please present the gist of the speech in your own words. The subject is Jihad. What does the speaker say about it? Does he support the Jihaad with a sword (or bomb) now in these days i.e. to fight against the non-Muslims. Or he recommends the Jihad against the desires of the self or he recommends the preaching of the Islamic teachings?

Surely, you must listened and read the whole article and understood it. So you are the best person to explain it to us. It is good that you have provided the full picture for any one to watch the complete material. But a few words from yourself would be useful. Thanks.

These materials arent your movies, or music clips or any piece of entertainment that needs reviews.

These are materials pertaining to the Deen (and I consider these materials to be knowledge, not just mere information) and therefore needs no reviews.

I can, however, talk of the things that I learnt from it, but then again, different people learn different things differently and I thus do no wish to limit or discourage the learning experience of others by my personal reviews of these materials.

The titles of these talks are self-explanatory (on the subject of the talk) and one does not need a review be it personal or otherwise, to know of the importance for all knowledge pertaining to the Deen are of same importance.

And surely, having listened to a talk of knowledge, specially one on the internet, does not make one the best person to explain. No wonder you have all sorts of weird comments and weird fatwas flying all over the net, posted by people who unfortunately, consider themselves the "best person" to speak of the knowledge that they are trying to talk about.

Murabit: Thanks. Your post:  And surely, having listened to a talk of knowledge, specially one on the internet, does not make one the best person to explain. No wonder you have all sorts of weird comments and weird fatwas flying all over the net, posted by people who unfortunately, consider themselves the "best person" to speak of the knowledge that they are trying to talk about.

I will listen to the videos when I have enough of time. As you know and you have agreed that there is a lot of weird fatwas flying all over the net. The subject / topic here has been Jihaad. We know that is a much misunderstood word.

There are some people who are advocating Jihaad with weapons. There are others who do not agree and they believe in peaceful Islam and peaceful preaching only. Maudoodi sahib advocated Jihaad with swords and I believe that the Ikhwaan of Egypt also did it (I am not sure).

If Jihaad means struggle then there is a lot of (political) struggle going on in many countries. But I am only interested in understanding the validity of the religious Jihaad.  I have seen many killed in Afghanistan in the name of Jihaad and the remaining beautiful children of the Afghans are roaming the streets picking crumbs from waste baskets.

Poor people did not have any good guide. Even if the guide was good but the present day world is very fast and clever, advanced technologically. Islam means peace. The path to progress is through peace and not war. Please give your own remarks. What do you say? Did you learn anything from those lectures / videos? Thanks.

the best jihad is jihad by pen, by which i mean education. if muslims were educated today, then the current situation in which muslims are embedded in today wouldnt even have arrived. i mean if Afghanistan and iraq were as developed as USA and europeon countries, if these countries were as prosperous in science and technology,  im sure  america wouldnt even  have thought of carrying out an attack bcz they wouldve known that theyve got all the technology to fight back and are not going to be a walk over.
so that is the only jihad that muslims in todays world need to attend to which is the only way out of their selfcreated situation.

and of course we wouldve had maulvis with broader vision having a  better understanding of islam, i would rather say the true understanding and there wouldve been peace within the countires themselves free of any suicide attacks
