Has anyone read any Hadeeth which say that dogs are haraam? What do muslims think about keeping a dog? Please do share...

As Salamu Alaikum Kaisay ho br.Huzaifah ? Answer me in hindi/urdu, itself, as you are learning it. Before going into the subject let us recall that halal and haraam in Islam. i.e things which are permissible and forbidden in Islam, are for our goodness. Allah swt created such haram things for our trial. Today, its proved that all those things which are forbidden or are not permissible, are harmful for us. We as muslims need to have complete faith and submit our will to these commands. The Prophet (sallal lahu alayhi wasallam) said: "Whoever keeps a dog, except a dog for herding, hunting or farming, his reward will decrease by one qiraat every day." (Reported by Muslim) So you see that it is not permitted to keep a dog unless it is for a purpose, like hunting or guarding property or other uses that are not contrary to the Sharee�ah. There's an other hadith regarding concerned with dog. Prophet Muhammad {Sallal lahu alayhi wasallam] said: "If a dog licks the vessel of any one of you, let him throw away whatever was in it and wash it seven times." - Muslim Those were the saying 1400 plus, years ago. But today science proved it to be correct. Dogs are the carriers of numerous parasites that highly harmful us. They get into our intestines and results in disease. ,By kissing them, let them lick them or, sleep with them we invite those parasites. Scholars have agreed that they can be kept under few circumstances like farmers who keep dogs for guarding and shepherding cattle, etc; people who are visually challenged who need to keep dogs as guides, hunters who use trained dogs, police who employ trained dogs for investigating crimes, those who need to keep guard dogs, etc This does n't mean we are to unkind to dogs or hold no compassion. Prophet (sallal lahu alayhi wasallam) said: "Whilst a man was walking he became very thirsty, so he went down to a well and drank from it. When he came out, he saw a dog panting and biting the soil because of thirst. The man said, �He is suffering the same as I suffered,� so he filled his shoe (with water), came out and let the dog drink until his thirst was quenched. Allah appreciated his good deed and forgave him because of it." The people asked, "O Messenger of Allah, will we be rewarded for how we treat animals?" He said, "In every living thing there is a reward." (Reported by al-Bukhaari} Hope these hadiths answer your question. ------------- Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: �All the descendants of Adam are sinners, and the best of sinners are those who repent." |

Yes Urdu is great. Also, I think that it's a good idea to learn the languages of great Muslim countries. I enjoy learning so there is no need for motivation. I have pets and I take very good care of them, and I
believe that every living soul has a purpose in life, either it be people or animals. I take care of my family members first, but I also believe that ALLAH created animals for a purpose, just like he created humans. We all have souls and as long as the pets are not abused, and well taken care of , I believe ALLAH will reward us on doing a good deed by taking care of what we can have and can afford to have pets. My dogs are both inside and outside of the house, inside mainly for protection while we are at work. When we get home they are outside until dark time. They have a certain room to sleep inside. THey are not allowed in the bedrooms where we pray. I feel that it is ok with ALLAH to have pets that will protect you and that you are able to give the a good life also. We are all Creatures of ALLAH. He created us all for a reason in this life that we share. So why not share it with a pet that new talks back to you and is very loyal to you as long as you train it properly. There are plenty of dog trainers everywhere. Jihad : Hindi is actually an Indian version of Urdu . . . the difference b/w the two is like 'American English' and 'British English'

Sharon: Thanks for sharing about your pets. I do not have a dog but I have a small "Guinea Pig" They are small and resemble rabbits. I have one which is a male and it is a good pet. Chrysalis: Ahh I see. I see many similar phrases as well as Arabic. I think I'll stick with the Urdu..make my studies easier. It is easy to practice because there are a few Pakistani convenience stores really close to my home. They are also fluent in Arabic so I practice both with them.
I only know one Pashto speaker and she is a female so it is hard to practice. Good Afternoon
I have a 2 year old pitbull terrier. She weighs around 70 pounds and she is white with a little of blue brindle on her back. It looks like she is wearing a saddle on her back with the blue brindle. Her name is Maggie and she is the joy of my life. She is very well respectful. We have been training her alot so she is very calm and friendly. What kind of dog do you have? People give back raps about pitbull terriers, but if the owner trains them well, then they are great in society. Sharon |

| Sharon, I'm with you! I am almost completely deaf because of being hit by a drunk driver and sustaining multiple skull fractures and other injuries. I have a hearing ear dog. Without him I would not be able to hear the doorbell, the alarm clock, the phone, the fire alarm, the carbon monoxide monitor, or any intruder into my home. Regarding dogs and disease, provided the dog is cared for properly, receives his vaccinations, is properly trained and properly groomed, you will not get diseases from him. In fact, he is more likely to catch a cold from you!! Of course, the idea of allowing dogs to eat at the table or from your dishes is not only unclean, it is bad manners! We also do not allow him into the prayer room. He is a joy to me, and twice saved my life because I did not hear sirens that would have meant firetrucks hitting me broadside, and once alerted me to a maniac on a bicycle who brushed my skirt, but because the dog alerted me, I was not hit so hard that my back would have been broken. The guy was on the sidewalk, and just kept going, too. Now that, I think, falls into the category of sin, not having a clean, well kept, loving dog. My dog is a Samoyed, and we call him Sugar Bear because he's white and sweet! |

Thanks for your reply. My dog Maggie is 2 years old and
she is very protective of me. I have recently been seperated from my husband, (praying for his return), but anyway, my dog is a very good watch dog. She is a joy to be being around since my husband left me. I take very good care of her and she also is not allowed in the rooms, except the front room which is kept clean all the time. She is due for her shots again, and hopefully that will happen soon. (a little short on money since he left me) I know that some people do not think that dogs should be in the house, but she stays in the room at night for my protection, plus the weather here gets hot. She also is not allowed to eat or drink from me. That is just to disgusting... She is very lovable and a great friend. Like they say Dog is a man's / women's best friend. Thank you for replying. Ah! Dogs.....and dogs in Islam..? Haram or Halal....? Another stigmatic animal among Muslims. Ofcourse they are haram....

I thought we are only suppose to be kind to animals of that nature but that's it. I just freaks me out when i see people caring for animals before they value a human life, and then they actually kiss these animals in the mouth and allow them to lick face

Well said sis Zaharah. We care animals more than human beings. We may not express love to our siblings around -- anyways, [am sure this line would bring up criticisms} I had a neighbour , who was a hindu. She called her dog, "My son".
. We cud not resist our laugh then. Yes, i agree that stress is relieved thru pets, and we get bonded to them --- khayr.

Hadith of Mohammad (pbuh) prohibiting eating of carnivorous animals
According to various authentic Ahadith narrated in Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim including hadith narrated by Ibn Abbas in Sahih Muslim, Book of hunting and slaughter, Hadith No. 4752 and Sunan Ibn-I-Majah chapter 13 Hadith no. 3232 to 3234, the Holy Prophet (pbuh) prohibited the eating of:
(i) Wild animals with canine teeth, i.e. meat eating carnivorous animals. These are animals belonging to the cat families such as lion, tiger, cats, dogs, wolfs, hyenas, etc.
(ii) Certain rodents like mice, rats, rabbits with claws, etc.
(iii) Certain reptiles like snakes, alligators, etc.
(iv) Birds of prey with talons or claws, like vultures, eagle, crows, owl, etc

In the Quran, Allah said, "Forbidden to you are the flesh of dead animals and blood and the flesh of Swine, and that which has been dedicated to any other than Allah and that which has been killed by slaughtering or by beating or by falling or by being gored, and that which has been (partly) eaten by a wild beast except that which you make lawful by slaughtering (before its death) and that which has been sacrificed to idols" (Quran Surah 16, Verse 14). The prehibition by species also includes these wild animals that have fangs (Quran: Surah 16, Verse 14), such as lions, tigers, wolves, dogs, and leopards, and birds that have claws, such as falcons, vultures, and eagles, animals that do not have ears, such as frogs, or are
poison-makers such as copperheads and rattlesnakes, are also forbidden (Al-Qardawi 1960). In Islam, all meat must be slaughtered.

Wa Alaikum As Salams, Seekshidayath I live in the States and it is very common here that people go to the point where they call their pets kids and they refere to themselve's as mom and dad. NOW THAT's TO MUCH (for me) to process. I have also seen here where people take out insurance policies, leave their estate when they die, and dress them in expencive cloths. I agree (somewhat) about stress relief (GET A FISH)

Occasionally it is lonliness, extreme emotional attachment and various factors that can make one extremely attached to a pet - that sometimes replaces them with human comfort. I would try not be judgemental. (Referring to Hindu Lady) Alhamdulilah you and I live in societies which are still relatively communal, and we still have those essential communal values and bonds. We have not come to a point where we replace human bonds with that of pets.
People who express thier pets as thier children etc - for them its a form of expression of thier love. Abu Hurraira - who liked cats quite a lot, was affectionately known as 'father of the cat' i.e. Abu Hurraira.
We probably feel the way we do, because of the stigma attached with Dogs.
Yes there are ahadith, that for our benefit - talk about the impurity of Dog Saliva etc. However, I dont see what is wrong with loving a pet dog - as long as you maintain your Islamic restrictions and conduct. Loving a pet - is because of the Rahmat Allah put in our hearts for vulnerable creatures.
Extremes are bad - in both directions. One should not let animals get too physically close, its simply a matter of hygiene. Nor should they be bequeathing thier wealth to them and replacing them with humans.
Btw, on an interesting note: One of the reasons people leave property/wealth to pets - is because of Tax evasion issues etc. Atleast, thats what someone once told me, I'm not sure.
When you care for an animal (or a human) and they return your attention, its natural to 'love' them. People get attached to things and objects!!! These are animals. So I can understand the way a pet owner might feel. (I already said I dont condone extreme obsessive behaviour right?
 ) And for the record, no I dont have a dog.

Well as a person who has a cat, I grew up with all types of animals.. I have yet to ever have a fight with any of them!  Chrysalis, you are right in that we have a soft spot for vulnerable creatures. I absolutely abhor cruelty. I hate bullies and people who are mean. .be it to people or animals. I volunteered in Thailand at the Elephant Nature Park. This amazing woman is rescuing the captive elephants to give them a better life. And I remember one sweet elephant has been intentionally blinded by her owner for refusing to obey a command. ------------- When you do things from your soul, you feel a river moving in you, a joy. My dog will not go near my prayer rug. I think he thinks that it is my place where I rest. He stays about 5 feet away when I pray & he faces Mecca. I did not teach him these things. I need a dog for farming but cannot afford the $ 1000 to $ 1200 for a trained herding breed dog. So I have acquired him ( for free )( a herding breed ) to sire puppies that I can train. ------------- do something to make the world a better place |

Thats interesting elisheba. I myself think that of all animals, the Human-Dog bond is unique! I have yet to see such a responsive pet. (I am also partial to Cats and Parrots.. have heard horses are pretty awesome too!) Maybe it would be a good idea to have a prayer area which your dog can't access? Because drool would be considered impure. In Islam its perfectly fine to have working dogs, such as for herding etc. I wouldn't worry about getting an expensive pedigreed herding breed... a lot of hybrids are naturals at herding! Its in their DNA. We adopted a stray puppy some time back, and at that time we had a little orphan goat kid we were raising too. (The Goat Kid was bigger than the puppy but still on the bottle). The puppy would notice that Bambi was not allowed to leave the courtyard, we would shoo her back every-time the gate opened and she tried to run outside. Once, some kids left the gate and the Kid escaped, 'Lucky' the puppy went running after the goat and herded her in! She literally dragged the goat in with her rope!!! It was quite amazing! Nobody had taught her that, she just picked it up on her own! And she was still a pup! SubhanAllah! Amazing animals... ------------- "O Lord, forgive me, my parents and Muslims in the Hereafter. ..uh, you did say goat didn't you? Pet goat. How nice. My wife adopted a kitten about a year ago. The cat gave birth a few days ago; with my wife acting as midwife throughout the night. Our closet has been transformed into labor and delivery.

Lol! Yes I did say 'pet goat'. Its pretty common to have livestock as pets in Pakistan. We don't have any state laws against livestock in the cities. Even at Eid-ul-Azha people keep goats and cows in their garage, and even slaughter them at their residence. A lot of localities however are now starting to ban that. It has its pros and cons... Congrats on the new kittens! The kids must be ecstatic! Its pretty common for cats to have babies in the closet.. our nieghbors cat disappeared 2 days before her delivery and was discovered with a litter of kittens in the husband's closet! ".....goats and cows in their garage" Back in the early eighties, I had a friend living in Bel Air who invited me and others for an aqeeka for his daughter. I hadn't eaten all day and arrived hungry only to find a live lamb in his driveway; which he proceeded to slaughter for our meal.....long night. Yeah my kids are very excited - bringing all the neighborhood kids inside for a peek.

I love dogs , other peoples  My wife is from Hong Kong and never had children so our or should i say HER dog is named DUMB DUMB ! No lie and i told here he is named rightfully so. He is o k but spoiled as heck . I do not let him in to where i pray and try to keep him in specific areas in the home. It is a battle because he is her son HAHA. Salaam Alakium to all !

I am the mother of a child that is deaf. My son loves animals and during this critical time of rehabilitation, a dog would help him a lot.
My husband told me that if I get a dog for my son, he would move out the house. I just find this ignorant!! I have studied agricultural business. I am very disturbed about the restrictions about dogs. This is my perspective: - Hyenas and Wolves are part of the same family, how come they are not forbidden? - Rats carry rabies and other more harmful bacteria. How come they are not forbidden? - Chickens are omnivorous such as the pig. A chicken would eat the same type of poop than a pig. Chicken meat out of the fridge for 10 hours would develop more bacteria than a pig "salmonella". How come the Prophet prayed while there was a dog next to him!!! |
