Salaam brothers and sisters in Islaam!
Unity should indeed be addressed first in today's world. Firstly, we should begin with our individual-selves. Hold on to the Qur'an and the Sunnah and make it our life. We must study closely what are the main factors that contribute to our disunity and how do we react to these factors on the personal level: national pride often taking the form of nationalism, may not be as severe as racism but something as minor as kissing a flag can spark the ignition...
There are many other factors, but in today's Muslim world, there is al lot of tribal and ethnic arrogance which spills out the madness of superiority or inferiority complex. At times it is very difficult, especially when one had never had any exposure to cultures other than that of his/her own...
One's culture should be Islamic first... the rest is ornamental and not fundamental. The mosque is a place of worship, regardless whether it is decorated with Moroccan tiles, or covered with palm tree leafs or featuring Malaysian marble. The human body, similarly must have a Muslim spirit submissive to Allah's commandments, aware of Allaah's presence and eternal involvement in the world... and it will then, not matter whether that body is wrapped in sarong, jubaa or kurta... it will not matter for a Turk whether he is Asian or European...
It is a pity to see Muslims fragmented but it should be known that it is also the very sign of them not following Islaam accordingly.
And Allah knoweth best.
