I am very knew in my search for truth and I have chosen to learn about Islam. When I started I took a religions class in college and that is where I learned first about Islam (I did not learn enough). I have just started to read the Qu'ran.

Is there a certain way to read the Qu'ran in order to best understand it (personal interpretation or literal reading)?

A good way to learn about Islam is through the biography of the prophet Muhammad. Karen Armstrong's biography is a good start.

A book that helped me understand individual verses of the Koran is a series of books from The Risale-i Nur Collection by Bediuzzaman Said Nursi, it is translated in English and can be very helpful.  Another author is Fetullah Gulen, he has written numerous books about Prophet Mohammed(phub) and Islam.  If you "Google" either name I am sure you will find the books available on the web.

I found the best way to read the Qu'ran for the first time was on my Palm
Pilot.

I tended to read only a few ayats and think about them. In codex format I
tended to skim and try to "get through it" rather than appreciate it.

To paraphrase Forrest Gump, "The Qu'ran is like a box of chocolates...".

I would also recommend reading "The 99 names of Allah" before reading the
Qu'ran. It is short, and will put you in the proper mindset before you begin.
