As Salaam Alaikum everyone,
I have a question concerning maintenance after divorce. In the Quran it says: For divorce women, maintenance should be provided on a reasonable scale. This is the duty of the righteous. (2:241) My niece got a divorce from her husband Sunday. She told me that her husband left her without food. Im trying to help her out as much as I can. Her husband moved out and told her he will pay her utilities and rent until her Iddah period is over but as far as food and clothing, he said it is her responsibility. She has to start out fresh because she was a stay at home wife. I am wondering when the Quran says Maintenance what exactly does that mean? I thought that the ex husband's responsibility was still Food, Clothing and Shelter until the woman's Iddah period was over.

Wa alaikum asalaam,
It is also my understanding that the woman is supposed to be looked after until the Iddah period was over, it is the man's responsibility until that time.
I urge you to seek help from an Imam.

Bayinnah, maybe your niece needs to be talking with a lawyer. If they were legally married, then he has legal obligations to provide for her, quite apart from whatever it says in the Quran. Did she not have a divorce agreement?
