I don't know this sister, she came to Palestine after I flew out, but
today she was a victim of the violence that takes place in the West Bank
on a depressingly regular basis. During a demonstration by
Palestinians against the Israeli Army which turned violent, the
soldiers began shooting at people with rubber bullets as well as
teargassing them.
There is a possibility that some of the Palestinians may have been
throwing rocks, though the report does not say. Regardless of that, as
an ISM member, Giulia, a volunteer from Italy, would have not been
engaged in it. ISM has a very strict policy against our members
engaging in violence- anyone who does so is immediately made to leave
the group. Giulia was observing what was happening from the side, and
filming. This is something that people in the group often do when
clashes break out, we do not either encourage or engage in violent
activity from anyone, but we document what is going on.
This did not make any difference for the Israeli soldier who shot her
in the head with a rubber coated steel bullet. The bullet hit her above
the eye, and she had to be taken to the hospital, where she received
stitches. Hopefully she will be alright.
A Palestinian teenager was shot as well. http://palsolidarity.org/2014/11/ism-activist-shot-in-the-head-with-rubber-coated-steel-bullet/ - ISM activist shot in the head with rubber-coated steel bullet | International Solidarity Movement
The struggle for justice in Palestine continues. Without justice,
neither Palestinians or Israelis will live in freedom or peace.
