I was watching a show today that raised an interesting question...
Can a muslim ever be an astronaut?

In zero gravity he would not be able to bow down to pray...
In outer space, would he be able to face Mecca.... and would it even still be relevant?

Does being a muslim preclude participating in the sciences of space?

I don't see any problem with knowing which way Mecca is.

Given the view you would surely often be able to see exactly where it is.

These are they who are truthful; and these are they who keep their duty." Ch. 2:177

Thumbs%20Up Greetings abuayisha,
So I guess they could pursue a career in space.  Smile

There can be problems with knowing which way Mecca is, for example near neutron stars or black holes.

If you are that close to one of those you are probably already dead.

Such a situation will not arrise for many times a longer period than the the time between Mohamed and now.

Well, close is okay, but not too close. Binary systems are cool places for Dyson slingshots saving lots of fuel.
