What religion is a person.... who lets say learned about Islam and the Quran as a teenager. they loved reading the Quran and enjoyed the topic of relgious studies. They believed in their heart that Muhammed was the messanger and believed Jesus was a prophet but they never officially joined Islam. Never confessed it formally at a place of worship because the culture adjustment would be to hard to handle. Instead because their family is of European Christain roots and their families goes to Chruch. They instead continued going to Christian chruches... out of culture not necessarily their true faith. They wanted to fit in with their family... but in privacy they would always read the Quran. They didn't want to be abandoned by family so just stayed Christian and went to Christian churches...because they wanted to conform and not get retaliation from family.... They figured maybe one day when family members pass away and family members grow apart he would offically join Islam in the presense of 3 witnesses.... would this person still be considered a Christian... or would they be a Muslim... I am assuming they would still be considered a Christian? |

Dear LittleGizmo, Question: Does one have to have witnesses to convert to Islam? Answer: No. Converting to Islam is a personal, private and sincere act between a person and The All-Mighty Allah Who Created him/her. Question: So why do most people convert in front of witnesses? Answer: Because converting in front of witnesses has its benefits; it ensures more commitment and gives a sense of comfort knowing that they now belong to a large community... it also offers support... however, it is not 'essential'. I would encourage and urge anyone to convert to this beautiful religion asap, even if it's 'in secret'... because our time in this life is very short and limited, and we don't know for certain how much time we have left in this life... once you've gone you've gone and it's too late then! No need to wait, simply say: There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is His Messenger. This will enter them into the fold of Islam and they can continue to study the religion.

In my opinion, he/she should testify that there is no god but Allah. That makes him/her a muslim already. And if he/she goes to the church with his/her family, make sure that when praying, he/she should intentionally pray to the One True God, i.e. God the Father. Not to Jesus Christ nor to the Holy Spirit. This is very important to bear in mind. We only have one God, i.e. the God of Abraham, the Creator of heaven and earth. Actions are according to the intentions, and everyone will get what was intended (hadith from Umar ibn Kattab). (Remember that Elisha didn't blame Naaman when Naaman said he had to accompany his king by bow down to their pagan's gods [2 Kings 5:18] ) And try to perform salah to Allah in his/her room privately and give certain amount of his/her money to the poor and/or the orphan for tzedeka/sodaqo/zakat.
