Asalaamu Alaikum--

I have heard from different muslims that tattoos are haram and some have said that they are not (though mostly i've heard that they are haram) which is it? thanks for your explaination.

Hope,

"The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) cursed the tattooer and the one who is tatooed...."   reported by Muslim.   This is from Al-Halal wal-Haram fil Islam (The Lawful and the Prohibited in Islam) by Yusuf al-Qaradawi, page 88.

I doubt the prophet used the word tattoo as the word the eytomology of the word tattoo comes from the word "toe" from the dutch language. It would be better if you had the Arabic version.
