There is a God...maybe

There maybe a God, but not a female one, a poll has found. The online US survey found just 1 per cent of those polled thought God was female. Thirty six per cent of respondents said God is male, 37 per cent said neither male nor female and 10 per cent said "both male and female". The survey conducted by Harris Poll showed 42 per cent of adults were not "absolutely certain" there is a God, compared with 34 per cent who felt that way when asked the same question three years ago. On whether God has a human form, 41 per cent thought of God as "a spirit or power that can take on human form but is not inherently human".

Greetings

Gender is an attribute of humans and animals.  It seems absurd to suggest that God might have a gender.  However, as most societies have been and continue to be male-dominated it doesn't surprise me that many people still think of the supreme being as male.   I'd be interested to see the results of a similar survey in a predominantly muslim country.  I can think of some countries where even asking that question might get people into a lot of trouble...

I agree with Matt.

Gender should not be assigned to God Almighty Allah.

I'm sorry that it is offensive but honestly there is no need to be.

Quote I dont believe that the survey, besides being utterly meaningless, is of any importance to most forum members.

well maybe and that is your opinion.  I can say the same to most of your cut and paste articles.

Quote Before we continue on this thread I would like to know if you, Angel and MattUK, believe that THERE IS NO GOD BUT ALLAH

And why is that importance to you ??

Quote When I googled the source of the alleged survey, <MXNews>, I was unable to find anything even remotely close to a news service, religious site, survey site, etc.

I guess you didn't do a very good job. I googled to check and its the number one on the first page

As for the suvey, did you try Harris Poll  I, too checked and its the number one on page one.

Salaamu Alaykum,

Specifically, because that is what the Holy Quran says.

Yes, I didn't like the title either, Sister Hanan.

Can I remind people that this is the interfaith section.

Some people asign gender to God, some don't, some asign both genders, some don't know and some don't believe in God, and some believe in god and some believe God is energy, some believe God is spirit, or whatever they believe.

As this is the interfaith section, this is in the right place.

If people are going to be offended and don't like something what is the point of having interfaith and learning and seeing about others.

Now, let's not get into what is and what isn't, create another thread if you wish, let's not derail anymore

I wish to clarify that I did not object to Angel's titling of her post. I agreed with Matt because he was right in saying that Allah was made a He by the men.

If Angel had not written the post, we would not have had the chance to clarify that gender should not be applied to Lord Almighty Allah.

In fact it is a thought-provoking topic.

In fact Qur'aan teaches us to say, "Allah is the One who........." instead of translating as "Allah is He who.............................." or "He, Allah is the One"

When we write, we should try to use Allah and God Almighty or the Lord Almighty more than using the term He or Himself. Qur'aan does the same.

Example: "HowAl-lah-ul aziz-ul-ghaffar" meaning "Allah is mighty and the most forgiving", but we should try to avoid translating and writing "Allah is He who is mighty and forgiving."

The word 'Ho-wa" in Arabic means "He is". Just my two cents.

Hanan, if your not happy you do not have to participate in this thread.

And I am sorry you don't like the phrase "some people" I don't go carrying around 10,0001 pages of who's who, do you?

Bismillah irrahman irrahim

Assalamu alaikum

I dont think there is any need to take offense from the thread or the topic. Angel is talking about 'there is a God ..... maybe', we muslims should be more secure than this. This is the reason we dont call our Lord just God, We call Him Allah, The God. You cannot attribute gender to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, neither can you make it plural. So easy as that.

wassalam

 As-salamu'alaykum,

Allah has no gender. Muhammad(sallau alayhe wassalam) avoided refering to Allah (subhana wa tallah) as "Father".

Assalaamualaikum

Well every Muslim knows this already: that Allah has no Gender.

And Angel does not mean to create problems here. She is posting what she is "discovering". My opinion. So I am not offended either.

Jazakallahkhair bmz for your linguistic explanation.

wassalaam.
