Greetings All and Peace Be Upon You!

I have some qeustions about music,singing and the media like videos,movies and pictures..

From the Quran,To me,it seems that only music that would lead one astray is condemned.I mean music/singing that one would listen to while drinking and having girls dancing of course would not be appropriate.

And again any type of music or singing that would lead one astray from the truth of course would be inapropriate.But that doesnt mean that all types of music or singing is.I cant remember exactly which Hadeeth/Sunnah that it is,but I recall one or more where a companion of Muhammed(pbuh) told some one to stop playing or singing and Muhammed(pbuh) told them to leave them be..Sorry If I cant remember,as I am a beginner in the study of Islaam,but I have read some of the Hadeeth and alot of the Quran.

What I have read seem to be referring to music or singing that are improper forms and not to all forms and even the scholars seem not to be in 100% agreement.

Any surah or hadeeth that specifically says.."All music and singing is from satan",would be appreciated..And as a beginner in the study of Islaam,I am aware that the Quran states that The Quran is finished,so if it says music is okay,and a Hadeeth contradicts it,I will have to weigh it against the Quran,if it is the Final Word of God,then it over rules all else..

Also when the Azhan(?) calls people to prayer and even the harmonic recitation of the Quran are forms of singing.So either they are wrong or not all forms of singing is wrong.Cant have it both ways.

About Movies,TV,Videos and pictures..

Ive read that pictures which includes moving pictures(ie..videos movies and tv) were forbidden or atleast some scholars seem to think so.My question is then how can Muslims use these things to promote Islaam or their leaders(ex.we see Muslims carrying pictures all the time of the leaders)???

I cant recall the exact hadeeth or surah's that speak of the use of these things,can someone help me out..

Yes I am aware of the other bigger issues that the ummah is facing,but the Quran says each individual will be judged on their own merits,not of those of others or the ummah,so on an individual level it is very important,because tomorrow you or I could be dead,while the ummah will still be here,so if music,etc is wrong then we will be judged on it by God(swt).So how can you say who cares?

Salam Jerry! MashAllah are you a revert? No the AThan and the Quran are not singing, they are reciting. These people spend years studying how to recite. Recitation is studied and it is different then singing. Reciting goes a certain way which is taught to the reciters in mosques singing on theother hand, anyone can make up a beat and a rythm. Nottice how all the Quranic recitations and Athanz sound the same in one way or other?

As for singing is it halla or haram. The scholars have differed. Some say its halal as long as the topic the song is about doesnt make you think about stuff which can lead to you doing haram. If its a religious song for example they said its allowed. The rest have said that no all music is forbidden exept those with duffoof (a type of arabic drum which is allowed, it was used at the time of the prophet in weddings and so on and he allowed it. They also used it I think when they sang for him Tala'a al badro alaina, or the Moon has come unto us reffering to him when he arrived at Madina).

I dont know what to tell you. There is a hadith which says that the day of judgment wont come until you allow singing and say it isnt haram and subhan Allah we have. So.... I think we should go with the majority and say its fobidden. Nasheeds are allowed however since they dont have music. Btw I have spoken to many Muslim reverts who were musicians and said that music was blocking there hearts and stiffing there hearts so again, I dont think its any good and Allah knows best. (I am no scholar).

As for the pictures.. they are not allowed to be any where near the place you pray in. Nottice there ar eni pictures in mosques. So when youre going to pray make sure you remove the pictures temporarely. We are allowed to us TV's and pictures media etc for the propogation of Islam and also for spreading all that is good :) Islam is yosr la osr as the hadith says which means easy not hard, meaning that you should always take the simple thing not the complicated thing. for more on this plz go to http://www.turntoislam.com - www.turntoislam.com it is a fan forum post your question in the islamic discussio section and they will give you a link with a very good explanation on this insha Allah. Im not a revert,only studying and reading about Islaam at the time.

Sorry Ive always thought when reciting or saying something in a rythmic tone it was called singing.Rappers and other singers do it all the time.

So since some scholars differ on their opinion on whether all forms of singing and music is wrong or not,then Muslims shouldnt judge other Muslims for their choice,as long as the type of singing or music isnt inappropriate..

So some pictures are okay in homes? I thought they were forbidden or atleast thats what some say.

From the Quran:

"But there are, among men, those who purchase idle tales, without knowledge (or meaning), to mislead (men) from the Path of Allah and throw ridicule (on the Path): for such there will be a humiliating Penalty." [31:6]

Lead to destruction those whom thou canst among them, with thy (seductive) voice, make assaults on them with thy cavalry and thy infantry; mutually share with them wealth and children; and make promises to them. "But Satan promises them nothing but deceit." 17:64

"Do ye then wonder at this recital? And will ye laugh and not weep. Wasting your time in vanities?" 53: 59-61

Allah says, "..for such there will be a humiliating Penalty ." for those who replaces the Qur�an with idle tales.(not sure what ayat or surah this is from)

These ayat's don't mention music,idles tales could be anything,for example mytholgies,Books,or tall tales that one buys,dont think they had CD's or tapes back then.

A seductive voice could imply the person is good at decieving people.Hence the reference to Satan promises nothing but deciet/lies.

53:59-61 mentions a recital,does that mean that all recitals are sinful?I dont think so.

And the last one says those who REPLACE the Quran with idle tales.Once again probably mythologies or stories from false religions.

Sayings of the Prophet:

The prophet (sallah allahu alieh wasalam) said "There will be in my ummah those who make it halal (permissible) adultery/fornication, silk, alcohol and musical instruments."

From this hadeeth I see Muhammad mentions musical intruments,but was he referring to all musical intruments or just to the ones mentioned as haram?Must be instruments that were already considered haram,because one cant make halal instruments halal,they are already halal.

Again Muhammad,mentions musical intruments but devilish instruments.Was he referring to all instruments?

And it mentions singing that is accompanied by misery,scraping of the face amd shredding the clothe,so must be referring to mourning.

And what about:

We learn from that hadith that the prophet (sallah allahu alieh wasalam) heard the duff play, meaning its not haram. Therefore, it is not haram upon men to hear it even though it was known that men never played it.

The instruments mentioned were haram,but Muhammed is said to have allowed them.Did he change his mind?

Either they are haraam or they are not? If it were okay on the day of eid to use the duff which was forbidden,then why not in praise of God?

Im not getting where Islaam has no burdens or is not hard? Either something is allowed or its not? If singing and instruments are from satan then they are wrong no matter what,if they are allowed then they are okay,as long as they are not used in the wrong ways.Thats simple.Forgive me,I am not meaning to seem hard headed or anything,Im simple trying to understand..

And the translations from the Quran and the hadeeth above are the only referrences to what people use..that was supposedly referring to music in the Quran or statements made by Muhammad.Not counting what people later said about them.

Another thing, doesnt the Quran state that we are to follow Only God's word the Quran and what the prophet says?Does it also say we must follow the interpretations of people that lived yrs later?

My opinion is that with all of the greater problems facing Muslims, and with the many other clear requirements that Muslims should be doing but do not do, Music is something trivial. You will find some great thinkers say it is ok, and you will find some arguments that say it is at least disliked, and some will say it is unlawful. I tend to go with the first two of the conclusions.

If it is God's will that I revert to Islaam,this will probably be what guidelines I follow concerning music. But I will not allow myself to offend others by listening to proper forms of music around them.Besides Im not a big listener to music in the first place.But I do not want to leave one stone unturned,if you know what I mean.
