Fasting Three Days a Month

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) advised Abu Nawfal bin Abi 'Aqrab to fast one day of the month, and when he asked to do more, the Prophet allowed him to fast three days of each month.

It was narrated from Abu Nawfal bin Abi 'Aqrab that his father said: "I asked the Messenger of Allah about fasting and he said: 'Fast one day of the month'. I said: 'Fast one day of the month'. I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, let me do more, let me do more'. He said: 'Let me do more, let mo do more; I am able for it'. Then the Messenger of Allah fell silent until I thought that he was going to refuse my request. Then he said: 'fast three days of each month"'.

QUICK LESSONS:
Fast according to your capabilities

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about fasting and how it can be done in moderation. The Prophet Muhammad advised Abu Nawfal bin Abi 'Aqrab to fast one day of the month, but when he asked if he could do more, the Prophet allowed him to fast three days of each month. This teaches us that we should not overburden ourselves with religious obligations; rather we should strive for moderation in our worship. We should also remember that Allah knows what is best for us and will never ask us to do something beyond our capabilities.
