The Obligation of Charity

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) encouraged charity and reminded people that it is an obligation for those who are able to give.

Abu Hurariah said: "Umar said: 'The Messenger of Allah enjoined Sadaqah and it was said that Ibn Jamil, Khalid bin Al-Walid and 'Abbas bin 'Abdul-Muttalib had withheld some. The Messenger of Allah said: What is the matter with Ibn Jamil? Was he not poor then Allah made him rich? As for Khalid bin Al-Walid, you are being unfair to Khalid, for he is saving his shields and weapons for the sake of Allah. As for Al-Abbas bin 'Abdul-Muttalib, the paternal uncle of the Messenger of Allah, it is and obligatory charity for him and he has to pay as much again"'.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith, narrated by Abu Hurariah, tells us about the importance of charity in Islam. It was reported that Umar said the Messenger of Allah enjoined Sadaqah and some people were not giving it. The Prophet Muhammad then asked why Ibn Jamil was not giving charity when he had become wealthy after being poor. He also reminded Khalid bin Al-Walid that he should be saving his shields and weapons for the sake of Allah instead of withholding his charity. Lastly, he mentioned Al-Abbas bin 'Abdul-Muttalib, who was the paternal uncle of the Prophet Muhammad, saying that it is obligatory for him to pay as much again in terms of charity. This hadith teaches us about how important it is to give back to those in need through charitable donations or other forms such as volunteering our time or skillset. It also reminds us that even if we are not financially able to give money away, we can still help others with our time and energy which can be just as valuable a contribution towards helping others in need.
