Paying Zakat During Ramadan

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) commanded that Zakat of Ramadan should be paid by free and enslaved people, male and female, in the form of a Sa of dates or barley, which was considered equivalent to half a Sa of wheat.

It was narrated that Ibn 'Umar said: "The Messenger of Allah enjoined Zakah of Ramadan upon the free and the slave, male and female, a Sa1 of dates or a Sa of barley, so the people considered that equivalent to half a Sa of wheat".

QUICK LESSONS:
Pay zakat during Ramadan; Be generous with your wealth; Help those who are less fortunate than you; Share your wealth with others

EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith narrated by Ibn 'Umar states that the Prophet Muhammad commanded Muslims to pay Zakat during the month of Ramadan. This is an obligatory charity given to those who are less fortunate than us. It is usually paid in money but this hadith states that it can also be paid in kind such as dates or barley which was considered equivalent to half a Sa of wheat. This shows us how generous and caring the Prophet Muhammad was towards those who were less fortunate than him. He wanted everyone to have enough food during this holy month so he made sure they could receive their share from others’ wealth too. This teaches us about being generous with our wealth and helping those who are less fortunate than us whenever we can.
