Sunan an-Nasai 2506 (Book 23, Hadith 72) #17117
Fasting on 'Ashura and Giving Zakatul-Fitr Before Ramadan

SUMMARY: This hadith explains that the Prophet's companions used to fast on 'Ashura and give Zakatul-Fitr before the command to fast in Ramadan and give Zakah was revealed.

It was narrated that Qais bin Sa'd bin 'Ubadah Said: "We used to fast on 'Ashura and give Zakatul-Fitr, and when the command to fast in Ramadan was revealed, and the command to give Zakah was revealed, we were neither commanded to give it, nor told not to do so, and we used to do it".

QUICK LESSONS:
Be proactive in your faith; Give charity; Help those who are less fortunate than yourself

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about fasting on the day of ‘Ashura, which is a day of fasting for Muslims. It also talks about giving zakat al fitr, which is a charity given at the end of Ramadan. The Prophet's companions used to do both these things before they were commanded by Allah to do so. This shows us that it is important for us as Muslims to be proactive in our faith and not wait until we are told what to do by Allah or His Messenger. We should strive to be good people even if we are not specifically told what actions will please Allah. Additionally, this hadith teaches us that it is important for us as Muslims to be generous with our wealth and help those who are less fortunate than ourselves.
