The Balance of Eating, Giving Charity and Clothing

SUMMARY: Eating, giving charity and clothing oneself are important acts of worship, but should be done without extravagance or showiness.

It was narrated from 'Amr bin Shu'aib, from his father, that his grandfather said: "Eat, give charity and clothe yourselves, without being extravagant, and without showing off".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of eating, giving charity and clothing oneself as acts of worship. It is important to do these things in moderation without being extravagant or showing off. Being extravagant means spending too much money on something that isn't necessary while showing off means doing something to get attention from others. Both extravagance and showiness are discouraged in this hadith as they can lead to pride and arrogance which are not desirable traits for a believer. Instead, it is better to practice moderation when it comes to spending money on food, charity or clothing so that one can remain humble before Allah SWT.
