The Prophet's Advice on Buying a Slave Woman

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's advice on buying a slave woman, Barirah, and how her Wala' (right of inheritance) should be given to her former masters.

Yahya bin Abi Bukair Al-Karmani said: "Shu'bah narrated to us, from 'Abdur-Rahman bin Al-Qasim, from his father, from 'Aishah. He (Shu'bah) said: "And he ('Abdur-Rahman) was the executor for his father". He (Shu'bah) said: "I was afraid to say to him: 'Did you hear this from your father'." -- 'Aishah said: "I asked the Messenger of Allah about Barirah, as I wanted to buy her but it was stipulated that the Wala' would go to her (former) masters. He said: 'Buy her, for the Wala' is to the one who sets the slave free'. And she was given the choice, as her husband was a slave". Then he said, after that: "I do not know". --"And some meat was brought to the Messenger of Allah and they said: 'This is some of that which was given in charity to Barirah'. He said: 'It is charity for her and a gift for us'."

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's advice regarding buying a slave woman named Barirah. When it was stipulated that the Wala', or right of inheritance, would go to her former masters instead of herself upon being freed, the Prophet advised that she should still be bought as it was better for her in this case. He also said that she should have been given the choice between staying with them or leaving them if she wanted to do so. Furthermore, when some meat was brought to him as charity for Barirah and a gift for himself and his companions he accepted it saying that it was charity for her and a gift for them. This hadith teaches us many values such as kindness towards slaves and generosity towards those in need of help or assistance. It also shows us how important freedom is by giving slaves choices over their own lives rather than forcing them into something they don't want to do against their will.
