Obedience to Allah Above All

SUMMARY: Obedience to Allah is required in all matters, even if it means disobeying a leader.

It was narrated from Abu 'Adur-Rahman from Ali that: the Messenger of Allah sent an army and appointed a man in charge of them. He lit a fire and said: "Enter it". Some people wanted to enter it, and other said: "We are trying to keep away from it". They mentioned that to the Messenger of Allah, and he said to those who had wanted to enter if: "If you had entered it you would have stayed there until the Day of Resurrection". And he spoke good words to the others. And he said: "There is no obedience if it involves disobedience toward Allah. Rather obedience is only (required) in that which is good".

QUICK LESSONS:
Obey commands which are good according to Islam

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks of the importance of obedience to Allah above all else. It was narrated by Abu 'Adur-Rahman from Ali that the Messenger of Allah sent an army and appointed a man in charge of them. The leader lit a fire and commanded his troops to enter it, but some refused due to their fear of Allah's commandment. When this was reported back to the Prophet, he praised those who refused and said that there is no obedience if it involves disobedience toward Allah; rather obedience is only required in that which is good. This hadith teaches us that we must always obey God's commands over any other authority or leader, even if it means disobeying them. We must always strive for goodness and righteousness as prescribed by God alone, not by any other person or authority figure.
