Forgiveness Over Revenge

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) encouraged the heir of a victim to forgive the killer instead of taking revenge.

It was narrated that Wa'il said: "I saw the Messenger of Allah SAW when a killer was brought by the heir of the victim by a string. The Messenger of Allah SAW said to the heir of the victim: 'Will you forgive him?' He said: 'No'. He said: 'Will you accept the Diyah?' He said: 'No'. He said: 'Will you kill him?' He said: 'Yes'. He said: 'Take him away'. When he went and turned away from him, he called him back and said: 'Will you forgive him?' He said: 'No'. He said: 'Will you accept the Diyah?' He said: 'No'. He said: 'Will you kill him?' He said: 'Yes'. He said: 'Take him away'. When he went and turned away from him, he called him back and said: 'Will you forgive him?' He said: 'No'. He said: 'Will you accept the Diyah?' He said: 'No'. He said: 'Will you kill him?' He said: 'Yes'. He said: 'Take him away'. At that point the Messenger of Allah SAW said: 'But if you forgive him, he will carry his own sin and the sin of your companion'. So he forgave him, and I saw him dragging his string".

QUICK LESSONS:
Show mercy even in difficult situations , Prefer peaceful resolution over violence .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of forgiveness over revenge. It was narrated by Wa'il that he saw the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) when a killer was brought by the heir of the victim with a string. The Prophet asked if he would forgive him and when he said no, asked if he would accept Diyah or take revenge and kill him. When both were refused again, he asked for forgiveness one more time and said that if forgiven, then the killer will carry his own sin as well as that of his companion's. In this way, it is clear that forgiveness is preferred over taking revenge in Islam as it can lead to peace between two parties instead of further animosity and violence. Moreover, it teaches us to be merciful even in difficult situations where we may feel wronged or hurt by someone else's actions.
