Seeking Refuge with Allah from Evil

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) taught 'Uqbah bin 'Amir a supplication to recite for protection from the evil of what Allah has created.

It was narrated that 'Uqbah bin 'Amir said: "The Prophet SAW was given a gray mule which he rode, and 'Uqbah led it. The Messenger of Allah SAW said to 'Uqbah: 'Recite'. He said: 'What should I recite, O Messenger of Allah?' He said: 'Recite: 'Say: I seek refuge with (Allah) the Lord of the daybreak, from the evil of what He has created'. And he repeated it until I had learned it".
أَخْبَرَنِي عَمْرُو بْنُ عُثْمَانَ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا بَقِيَّةُ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا بَحِيرُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ، عَنْ خَالِدِ بْنِ مَعْدَانَ، عَنْ جُبَيْرِ بْنِ نُفَيْرٍ، عَنْ عُقْبَةَ بْنِ عَامِرٍ، قَالَ أُهْدِيَتْ لِلنَّبِيِّ بَغْلَةٌ شَهْبَاءُ فَرَكِبَهَا وَأَخَذَ عُقْبَةُ يَقُودُهَا بِهِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ لِعُقْبَةَ ‏"‏ اقْرَأْ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ وَمَا أَقْرَأُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ ‏"‏ اقْرَأْ ‏{‏ قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ الْفَلَقِ * مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ ‏}‏ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ فَأَعَادَهَا عَلَىَّ حَتَّى قَرَأْتُهَا فَعَرَفَ أَنِّي لَمْ أَفْرَحْ بِهَا جِدًّا قَالَ ‏"‏ لَعَلَّكَ تَهَاوَنْتَ بِهَا ‏"‏ ‏.‏ فَمَا قُمْتُ يَعْنِي بِمِثْلِهَا

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about seeking refuge with Allah, the Lord of the daybreak, from all evil that He has created. It was narrated by Uqbah bin Amir who said that he was with Prophet Muhammad when they were given a gray mule to ride on. The Prophet asked Uqbah to recite something and then taught him a supplication which is known as ‘Isti’adha’ in Arabic. This supplication is recited for protection against all evil that Allah has created and it goes like this “Say I seek refuge with (Allah) the Lord of the daybreak, from the evil of what He has created”. This hadith teaches us how important it is to seek refuge in Allah and His power over all things so we can be protected against any harm or danger that may come our way.
