The Power of Seeking Refuge with Allah

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the importance of seeking refuge with Allah and how it is the best form of protection.

It was narrated that 'Uqbah bin 'Amir said: "I was walking with the Messenger of Allah SAW and he said: "O 'Uqbah, say!' I said: 'What should I say, O Messenger of Allah?' He did not answer me, then he said: 'O 'Uqbah, say!' I said: 'What should I say, O Messenger of Allah?' But he did not answer me. I said: 'O Allah, make him answer me'. He said: 'O 'Uqbah, say!' I said: 'What should I say, O Messenger of Allah?' He said: 'Say: I seek refuge with (Allah) the Lord of the daybreak'. So I recited it until I came to the end. Then he said: 'Say,' and I said: 'What should I say, O Messenger of Allah?' He said: 'Say: I seek refuge with (Allah) the Lord of mankind.,' so I recited it until I came to the end. Then the Messenger of Allah SAW said: 'No one who asks has ever asked by means of anything like them, and no one who seeks refuge has ever sought refuge with anything like them'."

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks to the power of seeking refuge with Allah. It was narrated by 'Uqbah bin 'Amir that he was walking with the Messenger of Allah [SAW] and he asked him to say something three times. On the third time, Uqbah asked what he should say, and the Prophet [SAW] told him to recite two supplications - “I seek refuge with Allah, Lord of daybreak” and “I seek refuge in Allah, Lord of mankind”. The Prophet [SAW] then said that no one who asks has ever asked by means anything like these two supplications, nor has anyone who seeks refuge ever sought it through anything like them. This hadith teaches us that when we are in need or feeling scared or anxious, we should turn to Allah for help as He is our ultimate protector and source of comfort. We can do this by reciting these two supplications or any other duas from Quran or Sunnah which will bring us closer to Him and provide us peace in difficult times.
