Seeking Refuge in Allah from Five Things

SUMMARY: This hadith is about seeking refuge in Allah from five things: miserliness, cowardice, senility, the trials of this world and the torment of the grave.

It was narrated that Abdul-Malik bin 'Umair said: "I heard Mus'ab bin Sa'd (narrate) about his father: 'He used to tech us five things, which he said that the Messenger of Allah SAW used to recite in his supplication: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-bukhli, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni, wa a'udhu bika an uradda ila ardhalil-'umuri, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatid-dunya, wa a'udhu bika min 'adhabil-qabr (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from miserliness, and I seek refuge in You from cowardice, and I seek refuge in You from reaching the age of senility, and I seek refuge in You from the trials of this world, and I seek refuge in You from the torment of the grave)'."
أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ مَسْعُودٍ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا خَالِدٌ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ عُمَيْرٍ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ مُصْعَبَ بْنَ سَعْدٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، قَالَ كَانَ يُعَلِّمُنَا خَمْسًا كَانَ يَقُولُ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ يَدْعُو بِهِنَّ وَيَقُولُهُنَّ ‏ "‏ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْبُخْلِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْجُبْنِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ أَنْ أُرَدَّ إِلَى أَرْذَلِ الْعُمُرِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الدُّنْيَا وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ

This hadith is about seeking refuge in Allah from five things. The first thing mentioned is miserliness which means to be too stingy with money or resources. The second thing mentioned is cowardice which means to be too afraid or scared to do something. The third thing mentioned is senility which means getting old and not being able to do things like you used to when you were younger. The fourth thing mentioned is the trials of this world which can refer to anything that causes difficulty or hardship for people on earth such as poverty, disease, war etc.. Lastly, it mentions seeking refuge in Allah from the torment of the grave which refers to a punishment that some people may experience after death if they have done wrong deeds while alive on earth. All these five things are important for us as Muslims because we should always seek protection and safety from them by turning towards Allah and asking Him for help through supplications like those mentioned in this hadith.
