Sunan Abi Dawud 200 (Book 1, Hadith 200) #20491
Eagerness for Night Prayer

SUMMARY: The Companions of the Prophet Muhammad (May peace be upon him) were so eager to pray at night that they would doze off waiting for it, and when it was time to pray, they would not perform ablution.

Narrated Anas: The Companions during the lifetime of the messenger of Allah (May peace be upon him) used to wait for the night prayer so much so that their heads were lowered down (by dozing). Then they offered prayer and did not perform ablution. Abu Dawud said: Shu’bah on the authority of Qatadah added: We lowered down our heads (on accounts of dozing) in the day of the Messenger of Allah (May peace be upon him). Abu Dawud said; This tradition has been transmitted through a different chain of narrators.

QUICK LESSONS:
Wait patiently for night prayer; Be devoted & dedicated in worship; Prepare before starting prayers; Perform ablution before praying
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks of the Companions' eagerness to perform night prayer. They were so excited about praying that they would wait until late in the night and even doze off while waiting. When it was time to pray, they did not take the time to perform ablution beforehand. This shows how devoted and dedicated these companions were in their worship of Allah. It also serves as an example for us today on how we should strive to make our prayers more meaningful and sincere by being patient and prepared before we start them.
