Sunan Abi Dawud 262 (Book 1, Hadith 262) #20553
Making Up Prayers Missed During Menstruation

SUMMARY: During the time of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), women were not required to make up prayers missed during menstruation.

Mu’adhah reported : A woman asked 'A’ishah: should a menstruating woman complete the prayer abandoned during the period of menses? 'A’ishah said: Are you a Haruriyyah? During menstruation in the time of the Messenger of Allah (May peace be upon him) we would not complete (the abandoned prayers), nor were we commanded to complete them.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a woman asking 'A'ishah whether she should make up prayers that she missed during her period of menstruation. 'A'ishah replied that in the time of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) they were not commanded to complete these prayers and so they did not do so either. This hadith teaches us that it is permissible for women to miss their obligatory prayers during their menstrual cycle without having to make them up afterwards. It also shows us the importance of following the teachings and practices of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
