Sunan Abi Dawud 1509 (Book 8, Hadith 94) #21801
Seeking Forgiveness from Allah

SUMMARY: The Prophet (PBUH) used to ask for forgiveness from Allah for all his sins, both known and unknown.

'Ali b. Abi Talib said: When the Prophet uttered salutation at the end of the prayer, he used to say: "O Allah, forgive me my former and latter sins, what I have kept secret and what I have done openly, and what I have done extravagance; and what You know better than I do. You are the Advancer, the Delayer, there is no god but You".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of seeking forgiveness from Allah. It was narrated by Ali b. Abi Talib that when the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ finished his prayer, he would say a special dua asking for forgiveness from Allah for all of his sins, both known and unknown. He asked for forgiveness not only for what he did openly but also what he kept secret or did excessively. This shows us how important it is to seek repentance from our Lord in order to be forgiven of our wrongdoings and be closer to Him. We should also remember that only He can forgive us as He is the Advancer who can delay punishment if He wills or forgive us if we sincerely repent to Him with a sincere heart full of faith in His mercy and justice.
