Sunan Abi Dawud 2058 (Book 12, Hadith 13) #22349
The Invalidity of Fosterage as a Reason for Brotherhood

SUMMARY: Fosterage is not a valid reason for considering someone as a brother.

A’ishah said the Apostle of Allaah visited her when a man was with her. The narrator Hafs said "this grieved him and he frowned". The agreed version then goes, She said "He is my foster brother Apostle of Allaah". He said "Consider, who are you brethren, for fosterage is consequent on hunger".

QUICK LESSONS:
Be mindful of who we consider our brothers and sisters; remember true relationships come from more than just shared experiences or hardships.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains that fosterage is not an acceptable reason to consider someone as your brother. Aishah was visited by the Prophet Muhammad when she was with another man. The narrator Hafs said that this made the Prophet frown in disapproval. When Aishah explained that the man was her foster brother, the Prophet responded by saying "Consider who are you brethren, for fosterage is consequent on hunger". This implies that just because two people were fostered together does not mean they are brothers; it only means they were both hungry at one point in their lives. This hadith teaches us to be mindful of who we consider our brothers and sisters and to remember that true relationships come from more than just shared experiences or hardships.
