Sahih al-Bukhari 2666 (Book 52, Hadith 30) #2552
The Consequences of False Oaths

SUMMARY: Taking a false oath to unjustly gain someone else's property is wrong and will anger Allah.

Narrated 'Abdullah: Allah's Messenger said, "If somebody takes a false oath in order to get the property of a Muslim (unjustly) by that oath, then Allah will be angry with him when he will meet Him". Al-Ash'ath informed me, "By Allah! This was said regarding me. There was a dispute about a piece of land between me and a man from the Jews who denied my right. I took him to the Prophet. Allah's Messenger asked me, 'Do you have an evidence?' I replied in the negative. He said to the Jew, 'Take an oath'. I said, 'O Allah's Messenger ! He will surely take an oath and take my property unjustly". So, Allah revealed: "Verily! Those who purchase a little gain at the cost of Allah's covenant and their oaths . . ". (3:77)

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains the consequences of taking a false oath in order to unjustly gain someone else's property. It was narrated by Abdullah ibn Mas'ud, who was once involved in a dispute with a Jew over some land. When he could not provide evidence for his claim, the Prophet asked him to take an oath, but he refused because he knew that the Jew would take an oath too and thus unjustly gain his property. In response, Allah revealed verse 3:77 which states that those who purchase little gains at the cost of Allah’s covenant and their own oaths will have no share in the Hereafter. This hadith teaches us that it is wrong to take a false oath or lie in order to get something from another person without their permission or consent as this will anger Allah and result in punishment on Judgement Day.
